There are good train connections to these cities, but you&#8217;ll have to stick to a schedule &#8211; a car gives you more flexibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You&#8217;re planning to go visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/top-vineyards-in-douro-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wineries in the Douro valley<\/a>. The public transports in Douro valley are very limited, with only a few train connections a day. Moreover, almost all vineyards are only accessible by car, so you either rent a car in Porto or you hire a private guide to take you around.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you or someone you&#8217;re traveling with has mobility issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have too much luggage to carry around.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re just planning to stay in the city for a couple of days, then there is no need to rent a car in Porto. There is a lot of traffic and it is quite hard to park, specially during the high season. Therefore, you can simply use the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/how-to-use-the-metro-of-porto\/\">subway of Porto<\/a>, the trains that arrive in <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/the-ghost-of-sao-bento-train-station\/\">S\u00e3o Bento train station<\/a> and in Campanh\u00e3, or use UBER &#8211; it&#8217;s well established here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. If you decide to rent a car in Porto, don&#8217;t leave it for last minute!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This might seem quite an obvious thing, but the fact is that most people care about the flights and the accommodation and leave the car rental for last minute. Thing is, in 2023 alone we had 15 MILLION visitors arriving in Porto&#8217;s airport. That is A LOT of people for a very limited amount of rental cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/amount-tourists-porto-2023-2.jpg\" alt=\"amount tourists porto 2023\" class=\"wp-image-133319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/amount-tourists-porto-2023-2.jpg 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/amount-tourists-porto-2023-2-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, I strongly recommend to not leave your car rental in Porto for last minute. Our city is one of the top tourist destinations in Europe, and we have thousands of visitors every month. So, the likelihood of finding a car rental with free cars just before you arrive is very low.<br><br>Moreover, the price of the rented cars vary according to the demand. This means that the more people looking for cars to rent the higher the prices will be.<br>Fortunately, I am here to help you to book a car in Porto and avoid hidden costs (extra insurances that you don&#8217;t really need, etc) on the way \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Decide <em>where<\/em> to rent a car in Porto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From my experience, there are three options for car rental in Porto:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you&#8217;re arriving at <strong>Aeroporto S\u00e1 Carneiro &#8211; the International airport of Porto<\/strong> -, them you&#8217;ll have plenty of car rental options. It is also the most convenient option since you will most likely be arriving in Porto by plane. However, it is always more expensive to rent a car in airports than at the city centres (this applies to any city in the world).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I always recommend you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoeurope.eu\/index.cfm?sflag=EUR&amp;aff=PORTOALITIESEU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">best car rental deals for the airport of Porto<\/a> before you commit to a specific company.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11507\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rent-car-porto-free-airport-shuttles.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br>Whatever rent a car company you choose at the airport of Porto, you&#8217;ll have a free shuttle to where the rented cars are. Each rent a car has its own minivan with its printed logo painted all over, so they&#8217;re easily identified.<br>These minivans departure every 5 minutes from the Arrivals (in Portuguese it&#8217;s written &#8220;Chegadas&#8221;) gates. They take no longer than 5 minutes to arrive at the rented cars, so don&#8217;t worry, you don&#8217;t need to rush<br>The schedule of all the rent a car companies at the airport of Porto is everyday from 7h &#8211; midnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you&#8217;re arriving at <strong>Campanh\u00e3 train station<\/strong>, you have fewer options, but it might be the best solution if you are arriving by train from Lisbon. You can rent a car with Europcar or with Avis &amp; Budget. Both offices are located in front of line 1 in Campanh\u00e3 train station, as you can see on the picture below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rent-a-car-porto-campanha-train-station.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11512\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can also choose to rent a car in <strong>Downtown Porto<\/strong>, but this would be my last option, because there is always a lot of traffic so you&#8217;ll end up wasting too much time. Moreover, don&#8217;t forget that these stores have a more limited schedule than the ones at the airport or in Campanh\u00e3 train station. I cannot provide you with a least of ALL the car rentals in Porto &#8211; downtown, but here&#8217;s a few of them:<br><strong><br>SIXT &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Avenida da Boavista, 1203<\/strong><br><strong>Guerin &#8211;\u00a0Rua de Passos Manuel, 176<\/strong><br><strong>Hertz &#8211; Rua de Santa Catarina, 899<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Watch out for hidden costs when renting a car in Porto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are so many hidden extras when you are renting a car that it is hard to know where to start from. But from my experience, these are the most common ones:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Automatic Transmission:<\/strong> this is a real problem for most North Americans! As in Portugal practically all cars have manual gear, this means that renting a car with automatic transmission can get really, really expensive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>How to save money:<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovercars.com\/?a_aid=portoalities\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.discovercars.com\/?a_aid=portoalities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">DiscoverCars<\/a> you can look for the best car deals with automatic transmission &#8211; simply tick the &#8220;Automatic Transmission&#8221; option on the &#8220;Car Specifications&#8221; on the left bar.<br>If you think that the price difference between an automatic car and a manual one is more than you are willing to afford then try to practice driving manual cars at home, or ask the people who are traveling with you if they can drive a manual car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuel: <\/strong>if you return the car without filling the deposit you have to pay a fee that is the equivalent to a full deposit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>How to save money:<\/em> <\/strong>this is an easy one! Every car rental company has a Full to Full fuel policy &#8211; basically they give you the car with a full tank and you just need to return it full as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Driver<\/strong><em>:<\/em> Even though you only need to be 18 years old to rent a car in Porto, younger drivers (aged less than 25 years old) pay an extra fee (between 5 &#8211; 10\u20ac A DAY). Moreover, an additional driver &#8211; besides the person who is legally renting the car &#8211; also pays an extra fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>How to save money:<\/em> <\/strong>Simply decide beforehand who is the designated driver and, if possible, make sure that he \/ she is over 25 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. What protections should you take when you rent a car in Porto?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you rent a car you have the base price and then all the protection options. You can decide which protection options to take both online or on the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Premium Protection<\/strong> that covers the car, the passengers and the luggage and reduces the excess to 0\u20ac. In short terms, the excess (called &#8220;franquia&#8221; in Portuguese) is the value that you&#8217;ll pay for activating the insurance in case something happens. It&#8217;s a fixed value that depends on the car category, that usually ranges between 950\u20ac &#8211; 5000\u20ac.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medium Protection<\/strong> that covers that covers the car, the passengers and the luggage and reduces the excess to a certain amount.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PAI protection&nbsp;<\/strong>covers only the passengers.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tires &amp; Glass protection<\/strong> is exactly what it means: a protection only for tires and glasses.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RSP protection<\/strong> provides an extended travel assistance for negligence occurrences, like when you put the wrong fuel in the car, or when you forget the keys inside the car, when the battery dies because you forgot the lights on, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Expert tip:<\/strong> I cannot tell you which protections to take because that is a personal decision, but I can tell you the ones I usually take when I rent a car in Porto.&nbsp;<\/em><br><em>I always go for Premium Protection and PAI protection, as accidents can happen and I want everyone in the car fully covered. However, I usually don&#8217;t take tires &amp; glasses protection, as this protection covers very unlikely events.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Understand the toll system in Portugal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you arrive at the rental car in Porto, they&#8217;ll ask you the usual stuff about insurances and if you&#8217;d like to Activate the Via Verde &#8211; the Portuguese electronic toll system.<br>Via Verde is a technology that allows you to pay all the tolls on the road by an automatic debit on your credit card. It pretty much consists of a little white box that is glued to the car window.<br>I strongly recommend you to activate the Via Verde system in your rented car. It costs around 1,50\u20ac to 2\u20ac \/ day, and it will save you a lot of time in tolls &#8211; when you see them, you just need to drive through the lanes with the Via Verde symbol painted on the floor, like on this picture:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11425\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/viva-verde-lane-highway-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br>Moreover, on some tolls you simply DON&#8217;T have an option to pay if you don&#8217;t have the Via Verde system activated:<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"462\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11424\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/automatic-toll-system-portugal-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br>If you don\u2019t use the \u201cVia Verde\u201d service (which automatically debits the tolls value on your credit card)&nbsp; you\u2019ll have to pay at the post office a few days later if you\u2019re driving a Portuguese-registered vehicle. This is not practical if you are only here on holiday, because the post office system takes 2 days to register your tolls so if you are leaving the country within two working days of driving through your last toll, you can\u2019t pay in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Parking in downtown Porto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Parking is downtown Porto is usually a pain BUT I am here to help you my friend!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the city of Porto, parking on public roads is paid in Zones I, II, III, IV, between 9am and 7pm, except holidays, from Monday to Friday, and in Zone I on Saturday, between 11am and 4pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the Limited Duration Parking Zones (ZEDL) in Porto:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/limited-duration-parking-zones-porto.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-133287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/limited-duration-parking-zones-porto.png 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/limited-duration-parking-zones-porto-300x141.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Red<\/mark>: Zone I (the most expensive zone)<br><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">Yellow:<\/mark> Zone II<br><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Blue: <\/mark><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Zone III<\/mark><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><br><\/mark><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Green:<\/mark> Zone IV (the cheapest zone)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parking on public roads has a maximum duration that varies between 2h and 10h, according to the location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To park in Limited Duration Parking Zones (ZEDL), you must obtain a valid parking permit. The ticket can be purchased physically at the parking meter (option A), or virtually, through the available electronic payment systems: Telpark and Via Verde Estacionar (option B). Via Verde Estacionar is only available for residents, but Telpark is an amazing app, available on both iOS and Android, that allows you to pay for parking on the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another option to park your rental car in Porto is to find a parking lot, obviously. There are hundreds of parking lots spread across the city. <a href=\"https:\/\/mobilidade.cm-porto.pt\/estacionamento-em-parques\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Some parking lots are owned by the city hall<\/a>, but the most useful ones (in my opinion) are located near the metro stations. So basically, you can park you car near the metro and then take the metro to get to the city centre, which is super smart because there is a lot of traffic on downtown Porto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the metro stations that have free parking lots:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1746\" height=\"1414\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/parking-lots-near-porto-metro-stations.png\" alt=\"parking lots near porto metro stations\" class=\"wp-image-133279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/parking-lots-near-porto-metro-stations.png 1746w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/parking-lots-near-porto-metro-stations-300x243.png 300w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/parking-lots-near-porto-metro-stations-1729x1400.png 1729w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/parking-lots-near-porto-metro-stations-768x622.png 768w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/parking-lots-near-porto-metro-stations-800x648.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1746px) 100vw, 1746px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9.
