The house is now owned by the local government of Porto with no future in sight.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing you notice about this building is the bulky and huge cubic windows. The right window has the ocean view and the left has the river view. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the building was designed to merge with the houses around (Moura\u2019s trademark), it still stands out with its video camera-like features. On the interior, there\u2019s a basement for archives and a workroom. Moura always jokes about having difficulties making windows and that\u2019s why he decided on that shape. The tall walls of the exterior were used to block the sound coming from the nearby metro station. The interior is designed with high-quality materials (e.g wood, marble), something people used to be able to afford before the economic crises. The symmetry in every corner of the house is exceptional.<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get there: take the metro to Parque da Maia &#8211; the house is a 6 minutes walking distance.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Casa das Artes (1981 &#8211; 1991)<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rua de Ant\u00f3nio Cardoso, 175 | Porto<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-14548\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/casa-artes-main-room-gallery-souto-moura-famous-building-porto.jpg\" alt=\"casa artes main room gallery souto moura famous building porto\" class=\"wp-image-14548\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Culturanorte.pt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Rua de Ant\u00f3nio Cardoso, you\u2019ll find an old mansion referred to as Casa de Allen. It was&nbsp;Marques da Silva who built the original house in the late 1920s for the 3rd Viscount Villar d&#8217;Allen, and is now considered a heritage site. However, a new division was added, which I consider one of the best Souto de Moura buildings in Porto.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Souto was responsible for renovating the gardens and adding an auditorium, film library and exhibitions room which he did very elegantly. This was one of Moura\u2019s first projects where the influence of Mies Van der Rohe comes through in the simplicity and cleanness. Also, the merging of wood, metal and concrete is outstanding.<br>If you\u2019re in Porto, you can visit Casa das Artes. It holds many cultural activities throughout the year. It\u2019s also a great chance for you to see the works of two of Porto\u2019s famous architects, which are years apart but coexist in total harmony.<br><i>How to get there: take the bus 502 until Casa das Artes, the building will be right in front of you.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Braga Municipal Stadium (2000 &#8211; 2003)<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parque Norte, Rua de Monte Castro | Braga<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-14555\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/souto-moura-famous-football-stadium-braga.jpg\" alt=\"souto moura famous football stadium braga\" class=\"wp-image-14555\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Photo: Leon L.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This award-winning project was built in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/best-cities-portugal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Braga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an hour away from Porto) to accommodate the 2004 Euro <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/where-are-the-best-bars-to-watch-football-in-porto\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Football<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Competition. Even though this may not be classified under \u201cthe best Souto de Moura buildings in Porto\u201d, I thought it is still important to include. This is one of the architect\u2019s best work, so don&#8217;t miss it when you visit Northern Portugal. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial project was meant to be constructed near a body of water on a hill called Monte Castro. However, Souto de Moura decided it was best to build the stadium on a higher ground. So the stadium was carved into some of the hill rocks which blended well with the concrete. The stadium has two bleachers in front of each other, but the sides are empty. This allows people to see the beautiful landscape. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took intensive research and many rocks moved to build this stadium. This project is a prime example of how Eduardo Souto de Moura can build something in harmony with its surrounding.<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get there: take Linha de Braga from S\u00e3o Bento train station until Ferreiros. The stadium is a 25 minutes walking distance.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>About Eduardo Souto de Moura<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-14553\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/souto-moura-famous-architect-porto.jpg\" alt=\"souto moura famous architect porto\" class=\"wp-image-14553\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Jn.pt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eduardo Souto de Moura was born in 1952. He attended architecture classes at the Porto School of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto. As a student, he worked in \u00c1lvaro Siza Vieira workshops (1974-1979). After finishing his degree in 1980, he won a design award and after that, he became an independent architect.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1981, he began teaching at Porto\u2019s School of Architecture. He\u2019s frequently a guest-speaker at well-known universities. Moura is a 3rd generation architect of the Escola do Porto movement. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, he added a Pritzker to his long list of awards, becoming the 2nd Portuguese architect to ever win a Pritzker prize, after \u00c1lvaro Siza who won it in 1992.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must visit one of Souto de Moura buildings in Porto to experience the feeling only a designer of this talent can transmit.
