It\u2019s a 50 minutes ride, but they don\u2019t really tell you anything about the bridges on the boat, but <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/discover-porto-bridges\/\">we\u2019ve got you covered!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walk on Dom Lu\u00eds I Bridge<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can walk on the bridge to get to Vila Nova de Gaia (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/why-are-port-wine-cellars-in-gaia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where all the Port wine cellars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are) or if you\u2019re feeling bold, walk on the top level of the bridge, the view is definitely worth it!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walk up Escadas dos Guindais stairs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t hate me for this, but I enjoy climbing Guindais stairs, with a lot of very steep steps that connect Pra\u00e7a da Ribeira to Pra\u00e7a da Batalha. They are challenging and the trail never seems to end, but they are fun. You\u2019ll end up laughing in pain when you reach the top &#8211; or maybe that\u2019s just me!<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get there: take the tram Line 1 to Infante. Pra\u00e7a da Ribeira is a 4 minutes walking distance.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Largo de S\u00e3o Domingos<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-13940\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/largo-sao-domingos-porto.jpg\" alt=\"largo sao domingos porto\" class=\"wp-image-13940\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Porto Vivo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the most historic Porto squares. It was previously known as the Fountain Square because of a fountain that existed there in its center. The fountain was later removed to open up the space because pedestrian traffic increased. For centuries, this used to be the biggest square in Porto. It witnessed many social &nbsp;and government gatherings and even political revolts.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1629, a revolt called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motim das Ma\u00e7arocas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happened in this square because the government during the Philippine dynasty wanted to tax the population to pay for the Spanish war expenses. The revolt started with female linen workers who ended up throwing rocks at the tax collector.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-15137 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/old-largo-sao-domingos-sqaure.jpg\" alt=\"old largo sao domingos sqaure\" class=\"wp-image-15137\"\/><figcaption>An old insurance company called Companhia de Seguros (now Pal\u00e1cio das Artes) in Largo de S\u00e3o Domingos, 1961 \u00a9 C\u00e2mara Municipal do Porto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Portugal restored its independence from Spain (1640), Largo de S\u00e3o Domingos witnessed another revolt called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revolta de Papel Selado <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1661 when people protested the new tax that required a stamp on official paper. The protestors gathered all official paper and burned it in the square.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name of the square comes from the medieval 13th century called S\u00e3o Domingos Convent which was heavily destroyed during the Siege of Porto (what is left of it is now &nbsp;Pal\u00e1cio das Artes.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Things to do near Largo de S\u00e3o Domingos<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit Casa do Infante<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15127\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/casa-infante-museum-porto.jpg\" alt=\"casa infante museum porto\" class=\"wp-image-15127\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Eurocloud Portugal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 2.20\u20ac, you can visit the house where Henry the Navigator was born. The museum has great information and artifacts showing Porto\u2019s past and present.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Explore Rua das Flores<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can walk around Flores street which has Miseric\u00f3rdia do Porto Museum, gift shops (Claus), bookstores (Chamin\u00e9 da Mota) and restaurants (Puro 4050).<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get there: take the subway to S\u00e3o Bento station. Largo de S\u00e3o Domingos is a 7 minutes walking distance.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Batalha<\/b> Square<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15130\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/historic-porto-square-batalha.jpg\" alt=\"historic porto square batalha\" class=\"wp-image-15130\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Cm-porto.pt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just outside of Porto\u2019s old city medieval wall, there was a space known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pra\u00e7a da Batalha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A legend says that the name <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batalha <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(which translates to the battlefield) came from a battle that happened between the Christians and the Moors. The outnumbered Christian forces won thanks to the blessings of Nossa Senhora da Batalha, who had a chapel dedicated to her. And that is where the name of the square came from.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15133\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/old-batalha-sqaure-porto.jpg\" alt=\"old batalha sqaure porto\" class=\"wp-image-15133\"\/><figcaption>Life in Pra\u00e7a da Batalha during the 19th century \u00a9 C\u00e2mara Municipal do Porto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the most interesting Porto squares with buildings full of history. For example, the NH Collection 4-star hotel used to be an 18th century palace. The palace was used as a hospital during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siege_of_Porto\">Siege of Porto<\/a> when the owner fled the conflict. Next to the church, there was a street used to transport people infected with leprosy to S\u00e3o L\u00e1zaro where they would be looked after.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ride the tram<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This a great place to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/how-to-travel-by-tram-in-porto\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ride the historic tram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which passed many important stops like Avenida dos Aliados, Cl\u00e9rigos and Santa Catarina.<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get there: take the tram Line 22 to Batalha &#8211; Guindais. Pra\u00e7a da Batalha is a 2 minutes walking distance.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Pra\u00e7a de Gomes Teixeira<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15134\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/old-bread-fair-gomes-teixeira-porto.jpg\" alt=\"old bread fair gomes teixeira porto\" class=\"wp-image-15134\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Poprostuflaga<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amongst many names, this square was once known as the Bread Fair square because it was a place where people sold flour, bread and cereal. It was also a square where the military would do their exercises.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15136\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/old-gomes-teixeira-sqaure-porto.jpg\" alt=\"old gomes teixeira sqaure porto\" class=\"wp-image-15136\"\/><figcaption>Old Pra\u00e7a dos Le\u00f5es in the beginning of the 20th century (now Pra\u00e7a de Gomes Teixeira) \u00a9 C\u00e2mara Municipal do Porto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the best Porto squares to hang out because it\u2019s very close to many historic monuments and buildings with different characters. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Things to do near Pra\u00e7a de Gomes Teixeira<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climb the Cl\u00e9rigos tower<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"445\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15128\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/climbing-clerigos-tower-porto.jpg\" alt=\"climbing clerigos tower porto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For just \u20ac5, you get to climb what once was the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/the-tallest-buildings-in-porto\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tallest building in Porto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The climb is pretty fun, but it can get crowded at the top. My favorite part about visiting the church is the \u201cImages of the Christ\u201d exhibition room.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Have pastries at Padaria Ribeiro<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bakery has been operating in Pra\u00e7a de Gomes Teixeira since 1878. Try some of their delicious salty meat pastries like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">past\u00e9is de carne<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empadas de vitela<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;The croissants will blow your mind, as well as the homemade cookies and the almond tart&#8230;in fact, everything at Ribeiro is wonderful!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit Lello bookstore<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/discover-lello-bookstore-porto\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lello bookstore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is famous for its deep history, unique design and its connection to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Potter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harry Potter<\/a> franchise. The entry fee is currently set at 5\u20ac (deductible in books).<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get there: take the subway to Aliados. Pra\u00e7a de Gomes Teixeira is a 7 minutes walking distance<\/span><\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Pra\u00e7a Carlos Alberto<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15145\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/histoic-carlos-alberto-sqaure.jpg\" alt=\"histoic carlos alberto square\" class=\"wp-image-15145\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Wiki Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the most known and historic Porto squares dating back to 1638. The location of this square between important roads that led to the North of the country gave it value. The square was named after <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/a-beautiful-love-story-in-porto\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italian King Carlos Alberto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who lived here during his exile.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was called the farrier square because there were many travelers in that area needing farriers. General Humberto Delgado who ran a campaign in 1958 against a candidate of the dictatorial regime was received in Porto and gave his speech in this square.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Things to do near Pra\u00e7a Carlos Alberto<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Go to Banco de Materiais<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15131\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/materials-bank-porto-free-entry.jpg\" alt=\"materials bank porto free entry\" class=\"wp-image-15131\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Cm-porto.pt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What used to be a 20th century palace (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palacete dos Viscondes de Balsem\u00e3o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is now a material bank dedicated to azulejos tiles in Porto and other historic decorative building materials. Entry is free of charge.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walk in Rua da Cedofeita<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/where-to-stay-in-porto-cedofeita-neighborhood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cedofeita street<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was opened during the 18th century, but it used to be a Roman road that took people North. This is the perfect street for walking since cars are not allowed. It is also one of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/shopping-in-porto-best-shops-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best shopping areas in Porto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get there: take the subway to Aliados station. It used to be a field owned by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabido da S\u00e9 do Porto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a religious council) which, in the 18th century, gave the property to Porto\u2019s city council. It was constructed in two years to meet the demand of the overgrowing population of Boavista. Try \u201cA Banca da Madeira\u201d for quick and yummy sandwiches. Many buildings were put down in order to construct it. Since then, it has undergone many changes like adding a fountain (now relocated) and two statues in the late 50s.
