Therefore it is my moral obligation to write about the few surviving traditional restaurants in Porto, hoping that you might like them as much as we do and contribute to its survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few things before we dive into the amazing world of the traditional restaurants in Porto:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t expect vegetarian \/ vegan \/ gluten free options in traditional restaurants in Porto. Out of courtesy they might come up with an omelet or a fresh salad to accommodate your dietary restrictions \u2013 but then again you will not be taking advantage of eating in such restaurants, will you?<br><br>Therefore if you are a vegetarian or a vegan, I recommend you to stick to the restaurants on my <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/survival-guide-vegetarians-porto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Survival Guide for Vegetarians<\/a>, to avoid having a disappointing meal.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These are <em>traditional<\/em> restaurants in Porto, so don\u2019t expect to find proper English menus. It&#8217;s a discreet restaurant, located at the back of the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/the-ghost-of-sao-bento-train-station\/?preview_id=4979&amp;preview_nonce=93bc1e27fa&amp;preview=true&amp;_thumbnail_id=40848\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S\u00e3o Bento train station<\/a>, so it&#8217;s the ideal place to have lunch before <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/train-stations-in-porto-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">catching a train<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a small but very welcoming place, with a short menu of honest food, including cod that is to die for  and the <em>tripas \u00e0 moda do Porto<\/em> (Porto tripe stew), perhaps the best in town. Lucky me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antunes serves, in an unpretentious way, typical Portuguese dishes such as the famous roast pernil (pork shank) (17\u20ac \/ 2 pax), the roj\u00f5es \u00e0 moda do Minho (typical fried pork dish from the Minho region) (9\u20ac) and the alheira (garnished game sausage) (8\u20ac) . For fish, you can find dishes such as bacalhau \u00e0 Rosa do adro (fried cod) (12\u20ac) and fried sardines with tomato-rice (7\u20ac), but the house specialties are definitely the meat dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My advice is to book a table or get there early, as it is a very popular restaurant.<br><br><em>How to get there: Trindade subway station is 6 minutes walking distance<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">O Ernesto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15372\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/traditional-fish-chips-ernesto-porto.jpg\" alt=\"traditional fish chips ernesto porto\" class=\"wp-image-15372\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 TripAdvisor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15371\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/best-traditional-restaurants-ernesto-porto.jpg\" alt=\"best traditional restaurants porto ernesto\" class=\"wp-image-15371\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been going to Ernesto since I am a little girl, to eat hake fillets with my family. In fact, Ernesto is one of the few Portuguese restaurants that has been part of the families from Porto for generations.<br>The restaurant\u2019s menu consists of traditional Portuguese flavours coupled with daily dishes that depend on the day of the week:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monday: <em>bacalhau \u00e0 Gomes S\u00e1<\/em> (traditional codfish dish from Porto) and <em>coelho assado no forno<\/em> (roasted rabbit)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tuesday: <em>tripas \u00e0 moda do porto<\/em> (beef\u2019s stomach cooked in a stew with white beans, carrots and cumin)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wednesday: <em>filetes de pescada com arroz de feij\u00e3o, de grelos ou de legumes<\/em> (hake fillets with vegetables\u2019 or beans\u2019 rice)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thursday:<em> filetes de polvo com arroz do mesmo<\/em> (octopus fillets) and <em>cozido \u00e0 portuguesa<\/em> (amazing Portuguese dish with different types of meats and sausages served with rice, potatoes and boiled vegetables)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Friday: <em>arroz de pato<\/em> (roasted duck rice)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saturdays: <em>roj\u00f5es<\/em> (pork cubes cooked in pork lard) and cabrito assado no forno (baby goat cooked in the oven, it\u2019s to die for!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are those who recommend Ernesto&#8217;s famous fruit salad to finish off the meal, but I prefer a cr\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e. It never fails to amaze me!<br><br><em>How to get there: Aliados subway station is 5 minutes walking distance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cozinha do Manel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15374\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/roasted-meat-cozinha-do-manel-porto.jpg\" alt=\"roasted meat cozinha do manel porto\" class=\"wp-image-15374\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15373\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/famous-portuguese-traditional-restaurant-porto-cozinha-do-manel.jpg\" alt=\"famous portuguese traditional restaurant porto cozinha do manel\" class=\"wp-image-15373\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Expresso<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most traditional restaurants in Porto is hidden in <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/guide-bonfim-neighborhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bonfim<\/a>, the hipster neighborhood that divides the tourist area from the the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/avoid-tourists-downtown-porto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oriental part of the city<\/a>. I&#8217;m talking about Cozinha do Manel, a restaurant that has been cheering Porto&#8217;s palates for the past 30 years.<br>Cozinha do Manel is one of the most welcoming traditional restaurants in Porto: you enter through a narrow hallway, from where you can take a sneak peek at the delicious desserts displayed on the fridge. The hallway gives access to a cozy dining room, covered in granite and tiles.<br>The starters are simply to die for: <em>alheira assada<\/em> (traditional Portuguese sausage) from Tr\u00e1s os Montes and <em>queijo da Serra<\/em> (soft sheep cheese) are mandatory at my dining table.<br>As main dishes I recommend <em>cabrito assado no forno<\/em> (baby goat cooked in the oven \u2013 you need to order it with at least two days in advance!), <em>arroz de pato<\/em> (roasted duck rice) and <em>vitela assada<\/em> (roasted veal \u2013 even though, to be honest, it always feels a bit rubbery). If you prefer to go for fish, I recommend you to t<em>ry bacalhau assado no forno<\/em> (oven roasted codfish) or hake \/ octopus fillets.<br>You should not leave Cozinha do Manel without trying its fabulous <em>rabanadas<\/em> \u2013 the Portuguese twist on French toasts -, served throughout the entire year.<br><br><em>How to get there: Hero\u00edsmo subway station is 5 minutes&#8217; walking distance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adega do Carregal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15376\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/traditional-rice-chicken-porto-adega-do-carregal.jpg\" alt=\"traditional rice chicken porto adega do carregal\" class=\"wp-image-15376\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Expresso<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15375\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/top-traditional-restaurants-porto-adega-do-carregal.jpg\" alt=\"top traditional restaurants porto adega do carregal\" class=\"wp-image-15375\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Expresso<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I ate my very first <em>roj\u00f5es<\/em> in Adega do Carregal many years ago. Even though I am not a huge fan of this traditional Portuguese dish, that consists of pork\u2019s cubes cooked in pork lard, I couldn\u2019t resist to try one of the famous dishes at one of the best traditional restaurants in Porto.<br>At Adega do Carregal I recommend you to try the codfish dishes as well as <em>posta \u00e0 mirandesa<\/em> (an amazing steak with a olive oil &amp; vinegar sauce). There are always daily dishes like the infamously good <em>tripas \u00e0 moda do Porto<\/em> (beef\u2019s stomach cooked in a stew with white beans, carrots and cumin) and <em>anho assado no forno<\/em> (roasted lamb).<br>The service is very attentive, without fake pretentiousness; we&#8217;re at home.<br><br><em>How to get there: Aliados subway station is a 10 minutes walking distance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Badalhoca<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15386\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/best-sandwiches-porto-badalhoca.jpg\" alt=\"best sandwiches porto badalhoca\" class=\"wp-image-15386\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 <a href=\"https:\/\/odaines.blogspot.com\">Odaines<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-15387\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/best-sandwiches-traditional-restaurants-porto-badalhoca.jpg\" alt=\"best sandwiches traditional-restaurants porto badalhoca\" class=\"wp-image-15387\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Expresso<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Badalhoca is not quite a restaurant but rather a down-to-earth tavern where we lay our appetite in smoked ham sandwiches and small plates of pork liver baits or octopus cooked with green sauce.<br>Always watered with a tap Super Bock \u2013 the traditional beer from Porto -, as if we order a soft drink we are greeted with a bell ring that will embarrass you in front of everyone. It&#8217;s really worth going there!<br><br><em>How to get there: For the downtown location, Aliados metro station is a 5 minutes walking distance.. For the other location, take bus 502 (direction Matosinhos Mercado) until Gomes da Costa bus stop. I think this alone tells you about the importance of Rog\u00e9rio do Redondo in the gastronomic scene of Porto.<br>One thing that I love in this traditional restaurant of Porto is that the owner, Rog\u00e9rio S\u00e1, really took the time to source the best ingredients from all around the country, such as seafood from Vila Real de Santo Ant\u00f3nio and prosciutto from Barrancos. The potatoes come from Tr\u00e1s os Montes, where my family comes from.<br>Here you can taste delicious traditional Portuguese food, like <em>cabrito assado<\/em> (roasted baby goat) and <em>tripas \u00e0 moda do Porto<\/em>. If you want my advice, just get there and be like Anthony Bourdain, who, according to the legend, tried everything, including a giant hake&#8217;s eyes (yes, we eat the fish eyes).<br><br><em>How to
