Firstly, because that discussion is totally useless: each city has its own charms and drawbacks.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And secondly, because my goal for this article is to help people decide which one is better to visit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So hold your horses and write only constructive things in the comment section, please \ud83d\ude42<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now back to the topic. I was born and live in Porto, but for a period of time, I lived in Lisbon. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though I hated every minute of my job, I ended up<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> getting attached to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the capital. That&#8217;s why I wrote this article with an open heart so that anyone who is undecided between visiting Porto or Lisbon can have objective criteria to make a decision. So let&#8217;s do this!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What is the best city to visit?&nbsp;Porto or Lisbon?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Safety<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-15548 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/porto-safe-travel.jpg\" alt=\"porto safe travel\" class=\"wp-image-15548\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Municipal cops in Porto \u00a9 Eduardo Aires<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This topic is daunting, but as the good engineer that I am, I went the extra mile and summarized some important numbers so you don\u2019t have to.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, crime is undoubtedly higher in Lisbon than in Porto. And there has been a much larger record of violence in the city of Lisbon, according to the latest Annual Report on Internal Security (2017).<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But since it isn&#8217;t fair to compare absolute numbers of two districts with different population sizes, the same report states that the crime rate per 1000 inhabitants is significantly higher in Lisbon than in Porto.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17707\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/porto-lisbon-safety.jpg\" alt=\"porto lisbon safety\" class=\"wp-image-17707\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Police in Lisbon&#8217;s airport \u00a9 Expresso<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both cities, there are, of course, crimes of opportunity and many drug traffickers offering their products in the middle of the street, which makes me extremely uncomfortable.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in Lisbon, cases of violence committed by private security guards of famous dance clubs, fights and even fatal shootings occur occasionally. It gives me zero desire to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in the capital.<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porto or Lisbon: objectively speaking but simplifying a bit, Lisbon is more dangerous than Porto.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Prices<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17701\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lisbon-porto-rental-prices.jpg\" alt=\"lisbon porto rental prices\" class=\"wp-image-17701\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A guest house in Lisbon where the short-term rentals are everywhere you look \u00a9 Expresso<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a reality that was painful for me when I moved to Lisbon: if it is true that wages are higher in the capital, the expenses are too. I mean really expensive!<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Porto, you can find lunch menus for 5 \/ 6\u20ac with a soup, the dish of the day and a drink. In Lisbon, I was never been able to eat for less than 8 \/ 10\u20ac, which doesn\u2019t seem a lot but it actually represents an increase of 60% compared to Porto. The same was true for dinner as well as having a drink or<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/what-are-the-best-cafes-to-work-in-porto\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going out for coffee with friends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding house or even <a href=\"https:\/\/juliedawnfox.com\/where-to-stay-in-lisbon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">temporary accommodation<\/a>, the real estate market in Lisbon is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wild, due to the famous Golden Visa laws, the complete lack of regulation of the houses available on platforms such as Airbnb and real estate speculation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17695\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/porto-or-lisbon-house-prices.jpg\" alt=\"porto or lisbon house prices\" class=\"wp-image-17695\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Arial view of Porto&#8217;s historic center where touristic rentals are blooming&nbsp; \u00a9 Expresso<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, with Porto having the highest tourist growth in the country, the rental costs are becoming as unbearable as in Lisbon.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In relation to transportation, the two cities are very similar due to the recent introduction of a single monthly pass (which gives access to public transport). On the other hand, Porto is a city much more compact than Lisbon, therefore, you can go sightseeing on foot, which is ideal for those who spend two or three days here. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are Ubers and taxis in both cities at exactly the same circulation rates, but Lisbon is a bigger city with a lot more traffic. So you end up spending more money and losing more time on transportation if you&#8217;re in Lisbon.<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porto or Lisbon: Although in recent years, prices have risen sharply in Porto and are increasingly getting closer to those in Lisbon, the fact is that visiting Porto is still cheaper than visiting the capital. You will spend less money on transportation as well as visiting historical monuments.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Touristic activities<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17710\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/porto-or-lisbon-amazing-rivers.jpg\" alt=\"porto or lisbon amazing rivers\" class=\"wp-image-17710\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tower of Bel\u00e9m in Lisbon \u00a9 Trover<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Porto and Lisbon are very diverse cities where you can find activities for all tastes and styles. Both cities have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazing viewpoints:<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/where-can-i-take-the-best-photo-of-porto\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meusroteiros.com\/en\/lisbon-viewpoints-portuguese-capital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisbon<br><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beautiful churches:<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/most-beautiful-churches-porto\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timetravelturtle.com\/best-lisbon-churches-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisbon<br><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activities for families with children:<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/top-things-to-do-in-porto-with-children\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fodors.com\/world\/europe\/portugal\/lisbon\/experiences\/news\/photos\/how-to-visit-lisbon-with-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisbon<br><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historic trams:<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/how-to-travel-by-tram-in-porto\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripsavvy.com\/how-to-ride-the-tram-in-lisbon-4150330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisbon<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You have <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/things-to-do-in-porto\/\">amazing monuments to see in Porto<\/a>, but Lisbon and Sintra have the stunning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/sintra-l99\/pena-palace-park-skip-the-line-entrance-ticket-t79596\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=porto-vs-lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Pal\u00e1cio da Pena<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/castle-of-the-moors-l4798\/sintra-castle-of-the-moors-fast-track-ticket-t156891\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=porto-vs-lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener sponsored noreferrer\">Castelo dos Mouros<\/a>&#8230; it is indeed hard to choose!<br>In both cities you can watch a Fado show, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/lisbon-l42\/fado-in-chiado-see-live-fado-show-in-lisbon-t31632\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=porto-vs-lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener sponsored noreferrer\">Fado show in Lisbon<\/a>\u00a0is more expensive than a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/porto-l151\/porto-fado-show-with-port-wine-t168071\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=porto-vs-lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Fado show in Porto<\/a>, which confirms what I explained about prices earlier on.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"491\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23778\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/river-cruise-lisbon-tejo.png\" alt=\"river cruise lisbon tejo\"><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One important thing I missed when I lived in Lisbon: the river! Maybe you&#8217;re already frowning and thinking &#8220;doesn&#8217;t Lisbon have the river Tejo?!&#8221;, and that&#8217;s true.<\/span> They even have a fantastic (and quite affordable!) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/lisbon-l42\/lisbon-city-cruise-t393433\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=porto-vs-lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">sunset river cruise<\/a> that I once took with my boyfriend.<br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in Porto, we have a much closer relationship to the Douro river than the people of Lisbon have to the Tejo river. As the river is narrow, we can cross the famous Lu\u00edz I bridge on foot to Gaia and admire the beautiful view of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/top-things-to-do-in-portos-ribeira\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ribeira neighborhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; something that is unthinkable in Lisbon since the two banks are too far apart.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, in Porto, we have huge sidewalks on the waterfront &#8211; whether on the Gaia side or on the Porto, Ribeira and Foz side &#8211; where we can have a drink, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/best-places-bike-rental-in-porto\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ride a bike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, go rollerblading or just take the dog for a walk. In Lisbon, most of the riverside area is occupied by cargo containers, which is quite unfortunate.<\/span><br>However, the good news is that you can take a river cruise in both cities: in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/porto-l151\/douro-river-six-bridges-cruise-t64873\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=porto-vs-lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener sponsored noreferrer\">Porto, on the traditional rabelo boats<\/a>, and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/lisbon-l42\/sailing-boat-sunset-tour-in-lisbon-for-2-hours-t45788\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=porto-vs-lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Lisbon, on a luxury yacht<\/a>.<br><i>Porto or Lisbon: It is very difficult to choose between the two cities based on this criteria, so ideally you can do <a href=\"https:\/\/meetmeindepartures.com\/14-day-itinerary-for-spain-and-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an itinerary that includes both cities<\/a>! It depends a lot on your traveler profile and with whom you are traveling (elder parents, your partner, small children, etc.). I suggest you think about the type of trip you want to have &#8211; will it be more focused on monuments, green areas, wines, etc. and choose Porto or Lisbon accordingly.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day trips from each city<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"444\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23780\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/sintra-palace-portugal.png\" alt=\"sintra palace portugal\"><br>I already wrote a really long article about the best day trips from Porto, but I never wrote about the best day trips from Lisbon.<br>From Lisbon you can visit the famous village of Sintra, \u00d3bidos and F\u00e1tima. A lot of people also take the opportunity to make combinations that allow them to visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/lisbon-l42\/lisbon-pena-palace-sintra-cabo-da-roca-cascais-daytrip-t387617\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=porto-vs-lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Sintra, Cascais and Cabo da Roca<\/a> on the same day, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/lisbon-l42\/lisbon-fatima-group-day-tour-w-obidos-batalha-nazare-t115432\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=porto-vs-lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">F\u00e1tima, \u00d3bidos, Batalha and Nazar\u00e9.<\/a><br>This makes perfect sense because most of these places are super tiny and it wouldn&#8217;t make much sense to dedicate a single day to each one of them, and by visiting them on the same day you will be saving time &amp; money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Cultural activities<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17713\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/porto-or-lisbon-sao-jorge-theater.jpg\" alt=\"porto or lisbon sao jorge theater\" class=\"wp-image-17713\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of the most important cinemas in Lisbon \u00a9 Cinema S\u00e3o Jorge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a point where I consider it completely different to be in Porto or Lisbon: access to cultural activities.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m not much of a party person, but I love film festivals, dance shows, classical music concerts, and book fairs. And when I lived in Lisbon, I felt that I had many more options in this respect than I did when I lived in Porto.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Lisbon, there are several independent movie theaters (S\u00e3o Jorge, Nimas, Medeia Monumental, Ideal, just to name a few). They are theaters where movie cycles occur on a wide range of themes. I, a movie buff caught in a jungle schedule, had great difficulty <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keeping up <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with so much cinema offer!<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same was true for theater and dance shows: it was an endless list of options! But the curious thing is that the shows were sold out very quickly, so I had to always be on top of things to get tickets.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17708\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/porto-or-lisbon-best-theaters.jpg\" alt=\"porto or lisbon best theaters\" class=\"wp-image-17708\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The interior of S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o National theater in Porto \u00a9 Cais da Mem\u00f3ria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Porto, things are more modest: we have an excellent theater (the S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o National Theater), an amazing concert hall (Casa da M\u00fasica) and a great performance theater (Rivoli). There are others, of course, but those I mentioned offer a fantastic schedule.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, things are changing, not only because of the investment that Porto City Hall has made but also due to private initiatives. However, realistically speaking, Porto is still not comparable to Lisbon.<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porto or Lisbon: As far as cultural activities are concerned, Lisbon wins over Porto.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Night Life<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17698\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/porto-lisbon-drinking.jpg\" alt=\"porto lisbon drinking\" class=\"wp-image-17698\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The party street Bairro Alto in Lisbon \u00a9 P\u00fablico<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Portugal we have a nightlife very similar to that of Spain: we eat late, we go out for a late drink and we return home, often in the morning. And like our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nuestros hermanos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we have the habit of going to a bar to ask for a drink, then we drink it on the street, something that horrifies all my American readers.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Porto, we gather around 11pm \/ midnight in Pra\u00e7a dos Le\u00f5es, the popular name of Pra\u00e7a Gomes Teixeira, a square in front of Caf\u00e9 Piolho (the most important students\u2019 cafe in Porto). Over there, you\u2019ll find many grubby taverns where you can have beers and shots of mysterious alcohol at very low prices.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17696\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/best-nightlife-porto-or-lisbon.jpg\" alt=\"best nightlife porto or lisbon\" class=\"wp-image-17696\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galerias area in Porto where parties take place <\/span>\u00a9 Conex\u00e3o<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, we typically move to the Galerias area &#8211; consisting of Rua das Galerias de Paris, Rua C\u00e2ndido dos Reis and Rua Conde de Vizela. Here we can find<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/best-bars-in-porto\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the best bars in Porto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where you can drink more sophisticated cocktails, show off your dance moves and socialize in the street.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Lisbon, the dynamic is similar to that of Porto, and it takes place in Bairro Alto. However, when I lived in Lisbon I got the feeling that there were more dance clubs there than in Porto.<\/span><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porto or Lisbon: As far as nightlife is concerned, Porto or Lisbon are very similar.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Weather<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17718\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lisbon-porto-weather.jpg\" alt=\"lisbon porto weather\" class=\"wp-image-17718\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sunny weather in Porto \u00a9 Lonely Planet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I lived in Lisbon, I used to listen to comments all the time about the fact that Porto is very rainy and, therefore, a dark city. It was something that irritated me a lot but the truth is, the climate varies from one city to the other.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-17716\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/porto-or-lisbon-best-weather-1.jpg\" alt=\"porto or lisbon best weather\" class=\"wp-image-17716\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An afternoon in Rossio Square, Lisbon \u00a9 World Travel Guide<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to data from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, it rained on average of 1186mm \/ year in Porto, while in Lisbon it rained on average of 774mm \/ year. On the other hand, average temperatures throughout the year tend to be higher in Lisbon than in Porto.
