Late August and September are the best months for wine lovers, as the harvest in Douro Valley takes place during that time. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">If you are a party animal, then I recommend you come in June as it is when we celebrate <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/everything-about-sao-joao-festival-in-porto\/\"><span class=\"s2\">S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o festival in Porto<\/span><\/a>, or the New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">During July and August the city is completely packed with tourists \u2013 it actually gets a little bit depressing for the locals as you cannot hear Portuguese anywhere! During these months there are queues for every monument and the prices are higher.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">If you want to avoid tourists, then I recommend you to visit between November and February \u2013 yes, it is colder and rainy, but it might pay off and everything is cheaper \u2013 including flights and hotels.<\/span> And the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/complete-guide-christmas-in-porto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Christmas season in Porto<\/a> is quite pretty \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is the weather like in Porto?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually foreigners have this glossy idea of Portugal being a beach, sunny destination but, dear friends, Porto is in the <em>north<\/em> of the country, and hence there is a loooot of rainy, windy days. In general, it rains in Porto from November to April but, with climate change, more and more the summer is extending almost until November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, this is what you should expect of the weather in Porto:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>plenty of rainy days<\/strong> between November and April (make sure to read <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/best-activities-rainy-day-porto\/\">my guide of what to do in Porto on rainy days<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>plenty of wind<\/strong>, even during summer time. Make sure to bring a scarf, regardless of the time when you are visiting Porto.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>a loooooot of humidity<\/strong>. This is something that my boyfriend, who is a Belgian, struggles a lot with \ud83d\ude1b This means that, besides raining a lot, in summer you will sweat a lot more. It also means that if you have breathing allergies like me, you will be in a world of pain if you come here during the winter months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>cold nights<\/strong>, even during summer. Make sure to bring an appropriate jacket.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Therefore, regardless of the month when you are traveling to Porto, I recommend you to bring comfortable shoes, a raincoat, a warm sweater and a scarf to protect you from the wind. Trust me, you\u2019ll eventually need all of them. \ud83d\ude1b<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get from Porto\u2019s airport to the city centre<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-19069\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/subway-carriage-first-time-porto.jpg\" alt=\"subway carriage first time porto\" class=\"wp-image-19069\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Filipa Brito<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If this is your first time in Porto you are probably wondering how to get from Porto\u2019s airport to the city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, the most logical and environment-friendly way of getting to the city centre from Porto\u2019s airport is to take the subway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you arrive at Porto\u2019s airport you take the stairs or the escalator to Floor -1. There you have to acquire an Andante card, which is a transport card that you can use on the subway as well as on the buses in Porto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each person must buy an Andante card and charge it with one Z4 trip (currently it costs 2,25\u20ac), which is enough to get you to the city centre. Then, just validate it, enter the subway and you\u2019re ready to go! (If this sounds confusing <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/how-to-use-the-metro-of-porto\/\">read my guide to the subway of Porto<\/a>, where I explain everything in detail). It will take 30 minutes to get from the Porto&#8217;s airport to Trindade subway station; it will be a bit more to reach other stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are traveling with a lot of luggage, with kids or with people with disabilities, then you might prefer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/matosinhos-l1480\/private-transfer-porto-airport-to-porto-t71772\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=first-time-porto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">get a private transfer from Porto\u2019s airport to the city centre<\/a>. It costs 30\u20ac for a group of 4 people, which is very reasonable. The trip will take anywhere from 12 minutes to 20 minutes, depending on the traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get around Porto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"501\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18205\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/bike-tour-porto.jpg\" alt=\"bike tour porto\"><br>Even if it is your first time in Porto you\u2019ll find it quite easy to get around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Porto\u2019s city centre is very hilly, but it is very compact as well. The main monuments, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/activity\/porto-l151\/porto-ingresso-torre-dos-clrigos-t57114\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=first-time-porto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Cl\u00e9rigos tower<\/a>, the Lello bookshop, and S\u00e3o Bento train station are close to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore you can easily walk around &#8211; with some effort due to the steepness of the streets, but not to worry about if you are in reasonable physical shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, I would use these rules to decide how to get around in Porto:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list ul1\">\n<li><strong>City centre: <\/strong>walk or take the subway (main stations: Trindade, S\u00e3o Bento, Aliados).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ribeira and Foz: <\/strong>these neighbourhoods do not have subway stations, and as they are very close to the river it takes some effort to get from there to the city centre. The best way to get there is walking. However, these are the flattest areas in the city, so I recommend you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.co.uk\/porto-l151\/city-bike-rental-in-porto-t87992\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=first-time-porto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">rent a bike<\/a> and ride from there all the way to Passeio Alegre, to Castelo do Queijo or even to Matosinhos. \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/things-to-do-boavista\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boavista<\/a>: <\/strong>this is the area where Casa da M\u00fasica and the synagogue of Porto are located. To get there, you should go to the subway station Casa da Musica. Yes, it is pretty bla bla bla but it is SO full of people ALL the time. You can skip the <em>excruciatingly<\/em> long lines of this monument by getting the skip the line ticket, but when you get inside Lello bookstore you will soon realise that you can barely move, given the ridiculous amount of people they let in at the same time. Don&#8217;t get me wrong, the it is a landmark of Porto and the view from the top is quite pretty, but oh boy it takes such a long time to get there! First you need to face the long queue and then you will have to climb veeeery slowly, because the steps are quite narrow and there are always people going up and down at the same time. It&#8217;s a nightmare!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Cl\u00e9rigos church is one of the most beautiful churches in Porto. Therefore, if I were you I would skip climbing the Cl\u00e9rigos tower altogether and simply visit the church (it&#8217;s free) or, even better, I would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/porto-l151\/torre-dos-clerigos-entrance-ticket-t57114\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=first-time-porto-SUMY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">watch a multimedia show at the Cl\u00e9rigos&nbsp;church<\/a>. Portugal as a whole has consistently been ranked as one of the Top 10 safest countries in the world. Porto, in particular, is VERY safe. It is a medium sized city of ~200.000 inhabitants with around 700 homeless people. I have lived here my entire life and I have only been robbed once (and most of my friends have never been robbed at all). I park the car wherever I want, I can come home alone at any time of the day, and it is perfectly safe to use jewellery and to use your mobile in public (unlike many other countries in the world!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, Portuguese people are known to be extremely kind and helpful, and they will go above and beyond to make sure you have a nice stay in their country (and, as a Portuguese person myself, I only started noticing this when I lived abroad).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Porto a good place for solo travelers?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I think so! There are lots of activities you can do on your own in the city, and lots of group activities you can join to meet people. The Portuguese are also a very friendly people, always willing to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Porto a good option for people with mobility issues?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, I don&#8217;t think so =\/ For several reasons: Porto is a small city but it is very hilly. The sidewalks are very narrow and cars are often parked on top of the sidewalk, which makes it practically impossible to walk safely (especially for people in wheelchairs or pushchairs) on many of the city&#8217;s streets. In addition, many streets are covered in Portuguese pavement, which are small clay cubes that are very slippery. So all in all, it is not very easy to get around the streets of Porto for people with mobility problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Porto expensive?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, Porto has become a very expensive city, especially since the pandemic. At the moment, it costs a fortune to eat out, with meals costing around \u20ac25-30 per person. Accommodation is also quite expensive.
