About the other accident, which was truly tragic, you can find out more by reading this article \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"O desastre do Elevador dos Guindais\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LEaO6rbC6PY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Guindais elevator in Porto opened in 1891, in order to connect Ribeira, where the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/how-were-the-rabelo-boats-manoeuvre\/\">rabelo boats carrying Port wine<\/a>&nbsp;arrived, to Batalha, a central neighbourhood and where there is road access to other Northern cities of Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-1928 size-full\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ELEVADOR-DOS-GUINDAIS-2.jpg\" alt=\"ELEVADOR DOS GUINDAIS\" class=\"wp-image-1928\"\/><figcaption>Picture of the First Guindais&#8217; funicular. <br>Arquivo Hist\u00f3rico da CMP.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Guindais elevator had capacity for 40 passengers and small packages, so it was widely used by street vendors during the day, and by gentleman on their way to cafes and theaters, at night.<br>In 1893, there was&nbsp;a serious accident caused by human mistake, resulting in the derailment of one of the vehicles, which slid down the slope almost until the beginning of the lower deck of D. Luis I bridge. Even though the accident didn&#8217;t cause deaths, the City Hall of Porto suspended its use. Guindais&#8217; funicular was only rehabilitated under Porto 2001 &#8211; European Capital of Culture.<br><br>What most people don&#8217;t know is that there was another disaster, also in Guindais but before the construction of the elevator, which&nbsp;caused several deaths.<br><br>On January 27th, 1879, a huge rock collapsed. On the top of the rock there was a house which, due to the imminent danger, was already being demolished under the rules of the City Hall of Porto. Unfortunately, the demolition work was not finished; the soil turned itself into dust, destroying not only the house but three adjacent buildings, and carrying with it the lives of 4 or 5 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_20160302_151443-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_20160302_151443-2.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160302_151443\" class=\"wp-image-1927\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Painting by J.
