Peso da R\u00e9gua, the main city in the region, is easily accessible using the highway (A4 + A24), but after that things get harder.<br>In general, the roads in the Douro valley are narrow and windy, and many of them do not have road barriers. They most definitely require an experienced driver who is willing not to drink during the wine tastings. Therefore, the first thing you should discuss with your family is who is going to be the designated driver during your stay in the Douro valley.<br>You can find cars but also mini vans on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovercars.com\/?a_aid=portoalities\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.discovercars.com\/?a_aid=portoalities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">DiscoverCars<\/a>, a great price aggregator that will save you tons of time when looking for the best car rental deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t feel comfortable riding in these roads, I recommend you get a private guide like me, as we are very used to riding those roads \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best activities in the Douro valley for families with kids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/what-are-the-best-douro-river-cruises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Take a river cruise<\/a><b> <\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"438\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15255\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/best-douro-river-cruises.jpg\" alt=\"best douro river cruises\"><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have kids in your family, or someone who is not so much into wine tastings, I would recommend you to take a short river cruise from Pinh\u00e3o, a village at the heart of the Douro valley.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are boat rides departing from R\u00e9gua but the ride is not so pretty from there. I also do not recommend the long boat rides departing from Porto to R\u00e9gua or to Pinh\u00e3o, because it turns out to be an exhausting day.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Pinh\u00e3o, you can choose to get a 1h boat ride or to get a 2h boat ride. <\/span>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/porto-district-l2382\/one-hour-rabelo-boat-tour-in-pinhao-t162504\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=douro-valley-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">buy your ticket for a 1h river cruise<\/a> in Douro river for only 12,50\u20ac (which is an absolute bargain!).<br>You can also try out a longer ride for only 25\u20ac &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/porto-district-l2382\/2-hour-rabelo-boat-tour-in-pinhao-t162399\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=douro-valley-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">buy your ticket for a 2h river cruise<\/a>. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a very popular activity in the Douro valley for families so I recommend you to buy the online ticket for this activity in advance.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a little bit of money to splurge, I suggest you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/pinhao-alijo-l89870\/do-pinhao-cruzeiro-em-iate-privado-pelo-rio-douro-t389799\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=douro-valley-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">take a private river cruise in the Douro river<\/a>, also in Pinh\u00e3o. The regular river cruises can get up to 60 people on the same boat, and they are always packed during the high season. It&#8217;s truly pretty \ud83d\ude42 The price of the ticket already includes a guided tour at the property, which is pretty cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/peso-da-regua-l89643\/vale-do-douro-piquenique-panoramico-na-adega-quinta-do-tedo-t388499\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=douro-valley-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">the only picnic in the Douro valley that you can book online<\/a> (because, as you can imagine, you cannot simply show up at a winery saying that you want a picnic for your family!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two other wineries where you can make a picnic:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Quinta do P\u00f4pa<\/strong>, one of the most popular wineries in the Douro valley. The location is perfect, overlooking the Douro river. The only thing I don\u2019t particularly enjoy about this vineyard is that, due to its popularity, you will be enjoying your picnic very close to other groups. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Quinta da Ro\u00eada<\/strong>, one of the largest properties in the Douro valley that are open to the public. What I like about this picnic is that it takes place underneath some olive trees, in the middle of the property, so it is perfect if you are traveling with kids or if you want to have some privacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ride a kayak in the Douro river!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-18342\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/girl-kayak-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"girl kayak douro valley\" class=\"wp-image-18342\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This is me, trying to kayaking whilst taking a decent picture &#8211; maybe I should hire a model next time! \ud83d\ude1b<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If your family is into physical activities, why not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/vale-do-douro-l4965\/pinhao-4-horas-de-aluguel-de-caiaque-no-vale-do-douro-t385465\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">kayaking in the Douro river<\/a> :)? It is fresh, it is perfectly safe (I am not wearing it on the picture because I am an idiot, but of course you are given a life jacket!) aaaaaand it is SO CHEAP. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/vale-do-douro-l4965\/pinhao-4-horas-de-aluguel-de-caiaque-no-vale-do-douro-t385465\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">rent a kayak in Douro Valley<\/a> for FOUR hours (4h) for 35\u20ac \/ 2 people. So, basically, 8,75 \u20ac \/ hour &#8211; each person pays 4,37\u20ac per hour. It is absurd (don&#8217;t go around telling everybody that I told you this, ok?). You just pick up your kayak in Pinh\u00e3o pier and go for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another really cool option for kayaking in the Douro valley is to take a boat from Pinh\u00e3o, to the mouth of the River Tua (it is a 1-hour ride). In Tua, hop off the boat and start your kayak journey on your own back to Pinh\u00e3o &#8211; it takes around 12km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This option is more expensive but it is pretty cool because a) it combines a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/douro-river-l4071\/pinhao-douro-valley-rabelo-boat-tour-and-kayak-experience-t385496\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">1h river cruise + kayak in Douro river<\/a> and b) it takes place in the most beautiful section of the Douro river, just east of Pinh\u00e3o village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/vale-do-douro-l4965\/pinhao-4-horas-de-aluguel-de-caiaque-no-vale-do-douro-t385465\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">online ticket for kayaking in the Douro valley<\/a> &#8211; no need to print the voucher, you just need to show up at Magnifico Douro Pier in Pinh\u00e3o. (It is near the iron bridge, in front of the Vintage House Hotel garden gate).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do a wine tasting at the best wineries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-15450 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/wine-tasting-quinta-bomfim-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"wine tasting quinta bomfim douro valley\" class=\"wp-image-15450\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Quinta do Bomfim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I have told you already about the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/top-vineyards-in-douro-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best vineyards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there are a few tips to choose the appropriate vineyard in the Douro valley for families:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are traveling with kids I highly recommend <strong>Quinta do P\u00f4pa<\/strong> as they have a \u201ckids section\u201d &#8211; basically a tiny table with tiny chairs where kids can paint, draw or play with some toys while the rest of the family is enjoying the wine tasting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another great option in the Douro valley for families is <strong>Quinta da Pacheca <\/strong>as it has a large garden and plenty of space for the kids to run wild. The wine tastings are pretty solid (aka they have good wines for tasting and knowledgeable &amp; funny guides), so this is definitely a place that will please the whole family regardless of the age of its members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quinta da Ro\u00eada<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/pinhao-l89870\/pinhao-quinta-do-bomfim-visit-and-tasting-t402159\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=douro-valley-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Quinta do Bomfim<\/a> also have lovely balconies overlooking the vineyards. However, they are fully dedicated to Port wines, so I recommend you to go there if everyone in your family is committed to trying Ports (a lot of people don\u2019t enjoy this fortified wine, but I honestly think it is simply because they have not tried the right ones yet!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Have lunch at one of the wineries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"670\" height=\"453\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10294\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/quinta-portal-eat-douro-valley.png\" alt=\"\"><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some wineries in the Douro valley have their own restaurants. As they are very popular, I recommend you to book them in advance (and not simply show up on the spot, especially during the harvest season!).<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinta de La Rosa, in Pinh\u00e3o, has a wonderful restaurant called Cozinha da Clara, overlooking the Douro river. This way you can please the kids (if you are traveling with them) or family members who are not so keen on wine tastings.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also recommend you stay as close as possible to either Peso da R\u00e9gua or Pinh\u00e3o, as they are the major cities in the Douro valley. The closer to them the less crazy driving you\u2019ll have to do.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close to R\u00e9gua, I recommend you the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pt\/six-senses-douro-valley.en.html?aid=1186505&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1&amp;label=douro-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Six Senses<\/a> &#8211; yes, it is <em>outrageously<\/em> expensive, but you could not possibly get better than this. Portugal is, unfortunately, one of the fastest ageing countries in Europe, and hence kids are a scarce (and valuable) &#8220;resource&#8221;. This means that Portuguese people LOVE young kids, and they will do their best to accommodate you and your little ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are kids welcome in wineries and restaurants in the Douro valley?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, they are. Wineries are not traditionally places for children (in the sense that they do not have playgrounds, etc). This being said, wineries are open spaces where children can play outdoors. Moreover and as I said before, Portuguese people love children and most wineries that I know offer fruit juice to families with kids. On top of that, most wineries have pets (most noticeable dogs) that your kids can play with, if that&#8217;s ok with you \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are there hotels with swimming pools in the Douro valley?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes!
