But if you travelling with kids, or if you want to surprise your partner with a lovely setting, then I believe that going for a picnic is one of the best things to do in the Douro valley!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This way you will have a lighter meal served in the middle of the vineyards and probably with an amazing view. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several properties that organise picnics in the Douro valley, but my favourite one (and most affordable as well!) is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/peso-da-regua-l89643\/douro-valley-scenic-picnic-at-quinta-do-tedo-winery-t388499\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">picnic at Quinta do Tedo<\/a>. The picnic basket includes local cheeses and charcuterie, homemade jam, marinated olives, fresh salad with organic veggies, traditional codfish cakes, bread, fruit (or a proper dessert, if you have a sweet tooth), orange juice and a bottle of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also two other picnics in the Douro valley that I tried:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quinta da Ro\u00eada, where the picnic is served at a lovely table under some olive trees. It is very bucolic! <br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quinta do P\u00f4pa, a winery famous for its astonishing view of the Douro river. The other wineries must be contacted directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Price: <\/strong>contact the wineries directly for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ride a kayak in the Douro river!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-18342\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/girl-kayak-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"girl kayak douro valley\" class=\"wp-image-18342\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This is me, trying to kayaking whilst taking a decent picture &#8211; maybe I should hire a model next time! \ud83d\ude1b<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best things to do in the Douro valley is a physical activity. Personally, and because I think that (due to the high temperatures) hiking \/ biking in Douro is for lunatics, I enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/vale-do-douro-l4965\/pinhao-4-horas-de-aluguel-de-caiaque-no-vale-do-douro-t385465\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">kayaking in the Douro river<\/a> \ud83d\ude42 It is fresh, it is perfectly safe (I am not wearing it on the picture because I am an idiot, but of course you are given a life jacket!) aaaaaand it is SO CHEAP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/vale-do-douro-l4965\/pinhao-4-horas-de-aluguel-de-caiaque-no-vale-do-douro-t385465\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">rent a kayak in the Douro valley<\/a> for FOUR hours (4h) for 35\u20ac \/ 2 people. So, basically, 8,75 \u20ac \/ hour &#8211; each person pays 4,37\u20ac per hour. It is absurd (don&#8217;t go around telling everybody that I told you this, ok?). You just pick up your kayak in Pinh\u00e3o pier and go for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another really cool option for kayaking in the Douro valley is to take a boat from Pinh\u00e3o, to the mouth of the River Tua (it is a 1-hour ride). In Tua, hop off the boat and start your kayak journey on your own back to Pinh\u00e3o &#8211; it takes around 12km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This option is more expensive but it is pretty cool because a) it combines a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/douro-river-l4071\/pinhao-douro-valley-rabelo-boat-tour-and-kayak-experience-t385496\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">1h river cruise + kayak in the Douro river<\/a> and b) it takes place in the most beautiful section of the Douro river, just east of Pinh\u00e3o village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/vale-do-douro-l4965\/pinhao-4-horas-de-aluguel-de-caiaque-no-vale-do-douro-t385465\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">online ticket for kayaking in the Douro valley<\/a> &#8211; no need to print the voucher, you just need to show up at Magnifico Douro Pier in Pinh\u00e3o. But if you <em>already happen to be there<\/em>, then I recommend you to visit Pinh\u00e3o&#8217;s train station in order to check its lovely azulejos tiles. They are nothing compared to the azulejos tiles of <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/the-ghost-of-sao-bento-train-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S\u00e3o Bento train station in Porto<\/a>, but they are quite lovely as they depict daily scenes from the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Price: <\/strong>Free! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schedules:<\/strong> the train station is open during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit a traditional wine village<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"508\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/ucanha-historical-village-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"ucanha historical village douro valley\" class=\"wp-image-29650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/ucanha-historical-village-douro-valley.jpg 778w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/ucanha-historical-village-douro-valley-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/ucanha-historical-village-douro-valley-768x501.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Paying a visit to one of the interesting villages is definitely one of the best things to do in the Douro valley and a great activity to do after some wine tastings.<br>I highly recommend you to visit Ucanha, a small village that has one of the first medieval tolls in Portugal &#8211; yes, you read that right! It is a tower at the beginning of a bridge, that the monks used to control (and charge) those entering its territory. The tower has an interesting exhibition and it is really worth seeing. If it is closed, don&#8217;t give up just yet &#8211; talk to the people in the village, they are very nice and I am sure they&#8217;ll find a solution!<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"584\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18343\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/monastery-sao-joao-tarouca-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"monastery sao joao tarouca portugal\"><br> Another interesting place to visit is the Monastic Garden built on the ruins of the Monastery of S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o de Tarouca, where more than 30 species of aromatic herbs are grown and sold. You can ask for a tour to visit both the ruins of the convent and the garden itself, where you&#8217;ll be able to try some edible flowers and buy aromatic herbs!<br><br>Another cute little place to visit is Tabua\u00e7o, where you can find the most complete clock in the world &#8211; yes, you read that correctly. I am not going to explain it any further in order not to spoil the surprise but I can tell you that it is definitely worth it if you have a couple of days in the Douro valley.<br>One thing you should know about Tabua\u00e7o though is that the road to get there (from the famous road N222 that connects R\u00e9gua to Pinh\u00e3o) is very windy and narrow. I love it, because it provides some of the most spectacular views over the region, but it is definitely not for the fainted hearts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Price: <\/strong>Free! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schedules:<\/strong> it&#8217;s best to visit the wine villages during the day &#8211; otherwise you won&#8217;t be able to enjoy the view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit the amazing C\u00f4a museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-18341\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/coa-museum-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"coa museum douro valley\" class=\"wp-image-18341\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 AiresAlmeida<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Much further East is the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/10-memorable-buildings-of-the-arquitect-siza-vieira-in-porto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">C\u00f4a Museum<\/a>, designed by the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/10-memorable-buildings-of-the-arquitect-siza-vieira-in-porto\/\">architect \u00c1lvaro Siza Vieira<\/a>. The C\u00f4a Museum displays exhibitions on the<span lang=\"EN-GB\"> hundreds of Palaeolithic engravings along the C\u00f4a Valley Archaeological Park, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 1998. <\/span><br><span lang=\"EN-GB\">It is rather inspiring to think that thousands of years ago our ancestors had the same creative instincts as we do now, and I left the C\u00f4a Museum with a great feeling. I highly recommend that you get the guided tour as it is very informative (and not boring at all!).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to book your ticket: <\/strong>I have already tried to learn how to buy the tickets online but their website is a mess, so I recommend you to either send them an email or to buy at the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Price:<\/strong> There are many museum spaces in Parque do C\u00f4a, with different prices, but a simple visit to the Museu do Coa costs 7\u20ac \/ person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schedules:<\/strong> the museum is open every day from 9h to 18h.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit the cathedral of Lamego<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"445\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gothic-cathedral-lamego-portugal.jpeg\" alt=\"gothic cathedral lamego portugal\" class=\"wp-image-47256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gothic-cathedral-lamego-portugal.jpeg 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/gothic-cathedral-lamego-portugal-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"375\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/painted-ceilings-lamego-cathedral-portugal.jpeg\" alt=\"painted ceilings lamego cathedral portugal\" class=\"wp-image-47257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/painted-ceilings-lamego-cathedral-portugal.jpeg 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/painted-ceilings-lamego-cathedral-portugal-300x168.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing I was not expecting the first time I visited Lamego, a city in the Douro valley, was to fall in love with its cathedral. After all, I am Portuguese and, as such, I spend my life tripping over churches, so they have lost their appeal over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But visiting the cathedral of Lamego is an entirely different thing because a) it was founded in the XII century, so it is one of the very few gothic cathedrals in Portugal b) it has fantastic cloisters from the XVI century and c) the painted ceilings are to die for. Really.\u00a0So do yourself a favour and stop there because it is definitely one of the best things to do in the Douro valley!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Price:<\/strong> free entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schedules:<\/strong> the cathedral is open every day from 8h to 12h30 and then from 14h30 to 18h.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ride on the panoramic road<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"443\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/panoramic-road-sabrosa-douro-valley-viewpoints.png\" alt=\"panoramic road sabrosa douro valley viewpoints\" class=\"wp-image-47260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/panoramic-road-sabrosa-douro-valley-viewpoints.png 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/panoramic-road-sabrosa-douro-valley-viewpoints-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">@ Jornal P\u00fablico<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone likes to complain about how windy the&nbsp;roads in the region are, but there was one particular road that I have to ride quite often (because of our Douro Valley private tours) that I found to be particularly unnerving, which was the old EM 323 road from Sabrosa to Pinh\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we have just (re)started our tours after the pandemic and oh boy, riding on that road is now one of the best things to do in the Douro valley! They basically converted and old and slightly unsafe road into a panoramic road with 11 fantastic viewpoints. It is truly, truly the most beautiful road in the Douro valley (yes, a lot more beautiful than the popular N 222 by the river!) and a wonder for people who love riding, like myself \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Price: <\/strong>&#8220;free&#8221; (if you don&#8217;t count the price of renting a car + gas + tolls :P)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schedules:<\/strong> this is an activity that is best enjoyed in the early morning or in the middle of the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take a train ride<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"425\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/famous-train-douro-valley.jpeg\" alt=\"famous train douro valley\" class=\"wp-image-47264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/famous-train-douro-valley.jpeg 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/famous-train-douro-valley-300x191.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably already read in countless blogs that you should take a train ride in the Douro valley on the historic train but what NO ONE told you yet is that there is a more beautiful ride for a fraction of the price. But I am here, my friend, to help you make rational choices on your trip to the Douro valley. There are two trains you can take to the Douro valley:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp.pt\/passageiros\/en\/how-to-travel\/For-leisure\/Nature-and-Culture\/douro-historical-train\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">historic train from R\u00e9gua to Tua<\/a>, using steam locomotive and five historic coaches. This train ride in the Douro valley costs A FORTUNE (45\u20ac \/ adult and 20\u20ac \/ kid, roundtrip) and cover such a small area. I only recommend this particular train ride for those of you who have <em>a thing<\/em> for trains and old engines.<br><br>But if you follow my advice, you will simply take the <br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp.pt\/passageiros\/en\/how-to-travel\/For-leisure\/Nature-and-Culture\/miradouro-train\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MiraDouro train that rides from Porto to Pocinho<\/a>, and vice versa, that costs 27\u20ac the roundtrip. This is SO MUCH BETTER &#8211; not because the ticket is cheaper, but because the most beautiful stretch of the route is between the Tua and Pocinho stations, not the ones afterwards (so, closer to R\u00e9gua!). So, take my word for it and, if you have the time, ride from Porto to Pocinho (it takes around 3h \/ 3h30). It is worth it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Splurge yourself with a massage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"470\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18345\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/woman-swimming-pool-six-senses-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"woman swimming pool six senses douro valley\"><br>In case you are not so much into sports or history, or if you are feeling a bit lazy, then one of the best things to do in the Douro valley is to indulge in a <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/best-spa-hotels-douro-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massage on one of the best spa hotels in the region<\/a>.<br>The hotels <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/best-spa-hotels-douro-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Six Senses Douro Valley<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pt\/vila-gale-douro.en.html?aid=1186505&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2&amp;label=best-things-douro-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Vila Gal\u00e9 Douro<\/a> provide spa services for their guests, but you can call them in advance to check for services available for tourists as well.
