They mostly served traditional Portuguese food and I am sure you&#8217;ll love them \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of things before we move on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Douro valley you will ONLY find traditional Portuguese food.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t expect to find vegetarian \/ vegan options in most restaurants, as this is the countryside. However, Portuguese people are very accommodating so if you ask kindly, people will find a solution.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can either have lunch \/ dinner at a restaurant or at a wine estate (&#8220;quinta&#8221;). There are also quintas that can prepare picnic baskets &#8211; check my guide about <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/how-to-plan-your-trip-douro-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how to plan the perfect stay in the Douro valley<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before we start: how do you get to the Douro valley?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the best ways to get from Porto to the Douro valley:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Premium tour:<\/strong> book our <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/tours\/private-wine-tour-douro-valley\/\">private wine tour in the Douro valley<\/a> or our <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/tours\/private-wine-tour-douro-valley-river-cruise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">River cruise and private wine tour<\/a>. A great way to meet fellow travellers \ud83d\ude42<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Most flexible option<\/strong>: rent a car on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovercars.com\/?a_aid=portoalities\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.discovercars.com\/?a_aid=portoalities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">DiscoverCars<\/a>.<br><em>Pros:<\/em> you will have total flexibility to do whatever you want during the day.<br><em>Cons: <\/em>it requires a skilled driver to navigate the narrow, windy roads of the douro valley. Moreover, you really shouldn&#8217;t drink and drive!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cheapest option: <\/strong>there are train connections from Porto to the major cities in the Douro valley: Peso da R\u00e9gua and Pinh\u00e3o. You can check the schedules on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp.pt\/passageiros\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CP website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best restaurants in the Douro valley, near R\u00e9gua<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wine House (Quinta da Pacheca)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rua do Rel\u00f3gio do Sol, 261 | Lamego<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26607\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/grilled-codfish-quinta-pacheca-regua.jpg\" alt=\"grilled codfish quinta pacheca regua\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26608\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/orange-ice-cream-creme-brulee.jpg\" alt=\"orange ice cream creme brulee\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26609\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sardines-tomato-gaspacho.jpg\" alt=\"sardines tomato gaspacho\"><br>The first thing I should mention about the restaurant at Quinta da Pacheca is the ambiance: the room is painted in light green and it has a large cupboard filled with amazing stoneware from the famous Portuguese brand Bordallo Pinheiro. It is quite beautiful!<br>At this restaurant they serve traditional Portuguese dishes like roasted cod, marinated sardines and creme br\u00fbl\u00e9e. They are served with the wines from Quinta da Pacheca itself.<br>The one thing I really dislike about this restaurant in the Douro valley is that the service, albeit courteous, is extremely slow: you can easily spend 2h having lunch, which for me is a nightmare.<br><em>How to get there: it is 10 minutes driving distance from Peso da R\u00e9gua.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Castas e Pratos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rua Jos\u00e9 Vasques Os\u00f3rio | Peso da R\u00e9gua<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"461\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26611\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/seafood-dish-castas-pratos-best-restaurants-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"seafood dish castas pratos best restaurants douro valley\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"547\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26610\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/food-castas-pratos.jpg\" alt=\"food castas pratos\"><br>My experience at Castas &amp; Pratos has always been faultless. Starting with the space, built on a former railway&#8217;s warehouse (the terrace is constructed in an old container!), which invites to the intimacy of a dinner for two or a fun group dinner.<br>Versatility, in Castas &amp; Pratos&#8217; dishes, is one of the reasons why I consider it one of the best restaurants in the Douro valley: in addition to the restaurant and to the terrace, it has a wine bar with more than 30 wines by the glass. It is simply fabulous for wine lovers like myself!<br>The menu highlights beautiful Portuguese ingredients such as giant prawn from the Algarve coast to transmontanas &#8220;alheiras&#8221;, which are yellow sausages without pork meat (served with baby goat cooked in Port wine).<br>At this restaurant they serve vegetarian dishes and it dish comes with the list of allergens, which I find most useful for people with food allergies.<br><em>How to get there: it is at the entrance of Peso da R\u00e9gua, at the old train station.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aneto &amp; Table<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rua Jos\u00e9 Vasques Os\u00f3rio | Peso da R\u00e9gua<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"442\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26613\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/portuguese-sausage-aneto-table-best-restaurants-douro-valley.png\" alt=\"portuguese sausage aneto-table-best-restaurants-douro-valley\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"442\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26614\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/tuna-carpaccio-aneto-restaurant-regua.png\" alt=\"tuna carpaccio aneto restaurant regua\"><br>Right next to Castas e Pratos is Aneto &amp; Table, one of the best restaurants in the Douro valley for those of you who prefer to have a lighter meal.<br>In fact, at Aneto &amp; Table most dishes are served in modestly sized portions and with a large salad. As Aneto is a small scale producer in the region, they make a wine recommendation (from their portfolio) to go along with each dish, which I find helpful.<br>As the food takes some time to prepare, I always like to order a cheese &amp; smoked meat board for the table, as it is delicious.<br><em>How to get there: it is at the entrance of Peso da R\u00e9gua, at the old train station.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tasca da Quinta<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rua do Marqu\u00eas de Pombal, 42&nbsp; | Peso da R\u00e9gua<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"445\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26615\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/cheese-board-red-wine-tasca-quinta-regua.jpg\" alt=\"cheese board red wine tasca quinta regua\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"445\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26616\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/codfish-dish-tasca-quinta-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"codfish dish tasca quinta douro valley\"><br>Tasca da Quinta is one of the best restaurants in the Douro valley for tapas lovers, and quite rightfully so.<br>The owner is a very kind young man who is very proud of his Portuguese culture, so don&#8217;t expect to find <em>huevos revueltos<\/em> or other Spanish like tapas. Instead, you&#8217;ll be able to taste yummy octopus salad, sticky pork ribs and sardines omelette.<br>The desserts are also worth mentioning, ranging from the orange almond cake to the apple tart.<br>It is a really tiny restaurant so I recommend you to book in advance.<br><em>How to get there: it is at the centre of Peso da R\u00e9gua, but it is hard to park the car nearby.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DOC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cais da Folgosa, Estrada Nacional 222 | Folgosa<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"323\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26618\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/amuse-bouche-doc-rui-paula.jpg\" alt=\"amuse bouche doc rui paula\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"323\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26619\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/fine-dining-douro-valley-doc.jpg\" alt=\"fine dining douro valley doc\"><br>DOC has been surprising the Douro valley since 2007, by the hands of the Michelin star <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ruipaula.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chef Rui Paula<\/a>. At riverside, with a huge terrace overlooking the Douro river, DOC welcomes you with all the warmth and relaxation.<br>The menu of complex flavours,combines elements of Portuguese cuisine with unusual international ingredients such as <em>tupinambo<\/em>, a tuber from Peru used during World War II, due to the shortage of potatoes.<br>And the cherry on the top: the amazing sommelier of the house, who so most wonderfully masters the combination of exquisite flavours with Douro wines.<br>Once I had the pleasure to have a conversation with Rui Paula himself, who explained me the origin of this project. &#8220;When I first came here, the Douro valley didn&#8217;t have great gastronomic traditions, despite the excellent wines. So I dared to diversify the culinary offerings of the region, taking in good products and giving them a new look. Always celebrating with Douro wines, of course!&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best restaurants in the Douro valley, near Pinh\u00e3o<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cozinha da Clara<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"w8qArf\">&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"LrzXr\">Quinta de La Rosa | Pinh\u00e3o<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"501\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26624\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/fish-dish-quinta-la-rosa-restaurant-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"fish dish quinta la rosa restaurant douro valley\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26622\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/codfish-dish-cozinha-clara-best-restaurants-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"codfish dish cozinha clara best restaurants douro valley\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26623\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/dessert-port-wine.jpg\" alt=\"dessert port wine\"><br>The first time I had dinner at Cozinha da Clara (at Quinta de La Rosa) I fell so completely in love with it that it is still one of the best restaurants in the Douro valley, where I go more oftenly. Moreover, it is also one of the most pleasant ones, with its lovely porch facing the Douro river.<br>Its young chef, Pedro Cardoso, pays a noble tribute to Portuguese culinary traditions, but renewing them and making them even more appealing to international palates.<br>Usually when I go there I order either sea bass or codfish, but I have yet to try a dish there that I don&#8217;t like. They also have vegetarian options in their menu.<br>For me the only thing I don&#8217;t like is that it has a short wine list, with wines from either Quinta de La Rosa or Jorge Moreira (the consultant wine maker), but if you are not used to drink wine with your meals this shouldn&#8217;t be a problem.<br><em>How to get there: it is 10 minutes driving distance from the village of Pinh\u00e3o.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Veladouro<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"LrzXr\">Rua da Praia | Pinh\u00e3o<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26626\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/roasted-codfish-veladouro-restaurant-pinhao.png\" alt=\"roasted codfish veladouro restaurant pinhao\" width=\"668\" height=\"407\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26625\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/grilled-meat-veladouro-best-restaurants-douro-valley.png\" alt=\"grilled meat veladouro best restaurants douro valley\" width=\"668\" height=\"409\"><br>Veladouro looks like a humble Portuguese traditional restaurant but it is so much more than that! The concept is very simple: they serve high quality meat and fish that are grilled to perfection and according to your preference.<br>Everything there is amazing, from the tenderloin to the tuna teriyaki and the grilled codfish. I believe they don&#8217;t serve vegetarian food but you can order a salad because they are huuuuuge.<br>Moreover, the owner of the restaurant (a young, good looking man) knows a lot about wines and he is the best person to help you pick one to go along with your meal.<br><em>How to get there: it is located at the pier of the village of Pinh\u00e3o.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quinta do Portal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EN 323 | Celeir\u00f3s<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26628\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/grilled-octopus-quinta-portal-restaurant-pinhao.jpg\" alt=\"grilled octopus quinta portal restaurant pinhao\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26629\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/traditional-portuguese-dish-quinta-portal-restaurant-douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese dish quinta portal restaurant douro valley\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26627\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/creme-brulee-strawberries.jpg\" alt=\"creme brulee strawberries\"><br>Quinta do Portal is one of the most famous vineyards in the Douro valley and it also has a good restaurant. The room itself is a bit scarcely decorated but that is largely compensated by the fa-bu-lous view over the vines.<br>As for the food, expect the wonderful traditional Portuguese dishes paired up with the wines from the property. Afterwards (or before lunch), take the opportunity to visit the cellars as they were designed by the famous architect Siza Vieira, from Porto.<br><em>How to get there: it is located 20 minutes driving distance from Pinh\u00e3o.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Toca da Raposa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rua da Pra\u00e7a | Ervedosa do Douro<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"491\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26631\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/roasted-baby-goat-toca-raposa.png\" alt=\"roasted baby goat toca raposa\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"469\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26632\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/toca-raposa-traditional-portuguese-restaurant-douro-valley.png\" alt=\"toca raposa traditional portuguese restaurant douro valley\"><br>I saved one of the best restaurants in the Douro valley for last but it is for the best as only the adventurous people will get there \ud83d\ude42 In order to do so, you have to drive in the beautiful (yet windy) roads south of Pinh\u00e3o, enjoying some fabulous view along the way.<br>Once at Toca da Raposa, you will enjoy a proper Portuguese home meal consisting of local specialties like slow roasted pork leg, baby goat rice and wild boar stew.<br>At the entrance you have a small &#8220;shop&#8221; where you can buy jams and local wines.<br><em>How to get there: it is located 20 minutes driving distance from
