In the mid-nineteenth century, people moved during S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o festival in raids, picking wilting leek on the way, and taking it back home. However, not so many years so a man brought sardines left over from another festival, which takes place before S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o&#8217;s.<br>Sardines were&nbsp;such a great success&nbsp;that it became the main dish of S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o festival, much to our delight \ud83d\ude42 And aren&#8217;t grilled sardines worth making it to the Top 5 traditions of S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o festival in Porto?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building &#8220;Cascatas&#8221; dedicated to S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-12816 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/build-cascatas-dedicated-sao-joao-porto.jpg\" alt=\"build cascatas dedicated sao joao porto\" class=\"wp-image-12816\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 www.portopatrimoniomundial.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Before I tell you about the tradition of&nbsp;&#8220;Cascatas&#8221;, let me explain to you the concept.<br>&#8220;Cascata&#8221; literally&nbsp;means <em>cascade<\/em> and, during S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o festival, &nbsp;they are representations of sceneries where <em>water<\/em> is strongly present (waterfalls, rivers, etc.). &#8220;Cascatas&#8221;&nbsp;typically reproduce typical places in Porto and painted clay figures represent people, professions and animals.<br>There is a certain parallelism between the Christmas scene (near the Winter solstice) and our &#8220;Cascadas&#8221; during S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o festival. &#8220;Cascadas&#8221;, however, with its bright colors and funny figures, represent &#8220;the life of a village after harvest, and our gratitude for the abundance of life&#8221;. It is even said that Fonta\u00ednhas (a typical neighbourhood of Porto) only became a mandatory crossing point during S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o festival when, in 1869, a resident set up a monumental &#8220;Cascada&#8221;, offering coffee to those who would come to see it.
