Thus, the grapes did not receive much sun exposure so they wouldn&#8217;t reach its maturation point &#8211; they were indeed, <em>green<\/em>\u00a0grapes\u00a0\ud83d\ude42 This kind of plantation is quite evident in this photo:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-12970 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/green-wine-portugal.png\" alt=\"green wine portugal\" class=\"wp-image-12970\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9&nbsp;CVRVV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Today it is completely different. The investment in the production of green wine <em>per se<\/em>&nbsp;coupled&nbsp;with the technological evolution allow the grapes to&nbsp;receive the sun exposure they need to complete its maturation. Thus, green wines are not <em>unripe<\/em> wines, but white, red or ros\u00e9, like any other type of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Green wine <em>never<\/em>&nbsp;ages in wood<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most green wine sold nowadays\u00a0indeed doesn&#8217;t actually age\u00a0in\u00a0wood. Instead, the entire process of vinification occurs in stainless steel vats. However, there are already some producers of green wine to produce wines aged in wood.<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wine tours portugal green wine region quinta do soalheiro\" width=\"778\" height=\"485\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12971 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/green-wine-portugal-production-process.jpg\" alt=\"green wine portugal production process\"><br>Namely, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soalheiro.com\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quinta do Soalheiro<\/a> with its award-winning 2014 Alvarinho Soalheiro Reserva, a wine which fermented 100% in oak barrels that received the silver medal at the <a href=\"http:\/\/awards.decanter.com\/DWWA\/2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Decanter World Wine Awards 2016<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quintadoameal.com\/index.php\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quinta do Ameal<\/a>, for example, with its magnificent Escolha, which ages for 6 months in used French oak barrels from Nevers.<br>These are exceptional wines that demand some patience to reveal its aromas and flavors and that\u00a0shall be\u00a0harmonised with an elegant meal.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wine tours portugal green wine region\" width=\"778\" height=\"503\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12972 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/green-wine-portugal-history.jpg\" alt=\"green wine portugal history\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Green wine is always fresh, fruity&nbsp;and floral<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The communication of the Viticulture Commission of the Vinho Verde region positions the green wines as &#8220;fresh, fruity, floral&#8221;, which immediately calls for the\u00a0consumption of green wines during the warmer months of the year.<br>It is not a wrong communication, taking into account that most part of the green wines produced today fit\u00a0this profile &#8211; fresh, fruity and floral.<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"135\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5416\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-06-at-12.15.19.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2016-11-06-at-12-15-19\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are producers showing that green wines can be more than that. Casa de\u00a0Cello, which belongs to\u00a0Jo\u00e3o Pedro Ara\u00fajo, brags &#8211; with all the credit! &#8211; about its &#8220;serious, dry wines.&#8221;<br>Another excellent example of a producer who dares to be different is Pedro Ara\u00fajo, the former owner of Quinta do Ameal, who says that he is &#8220;as a producer of great white wines&#8221;, avoiding the usual connotation of green wines.<br>Examples that in the same region coexist different green wines that satisfy different consumer profiles at different moments, ranging from more affordable wines available in supermarkets to wines that make it to the\u00a0wine lists of some of the best restaurants in the world.<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"588\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12973 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/green-wine-portugal-quinta-ameal.jpg\" alt=\"green wine portugal quinta ameal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.&nbsp;Green wine is <em>always<\/em> a white wine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This myth was broken with a great effort, I must say. In some areas of the Minho region, where green wines are produced, it is very common to drink wine produced with\u00a0&#8220;vinh\u00e3o&#8221;. &#8220;Vinh\u00e3o&#8221; is a\u00a0grape variety also known as sous\u00e3o in the Douro Valley, which is mainly used for coloring (the skin\u00a0and the pulp of this grape variety are both\u00a0red, giving a stronger color to the wine).<br>In the green wine\u00a0region, vinh\u00e3o is drank in special\u00a0bowls during the meal. After several unsuccessful attempts, I can say that green wines are not always white &#8230; but I&#8217;d rather if they were!<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"493\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12974 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/green-wine-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"green wine portugal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a green wine after all?!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After breaking all these myths, let&#8217;s go back to the beginning. Green wines are no more than the wines produced in the demarcated region of Vinho Verde in Portugal, with all the variety and complexity that that terroir entails.<br>This region was marked on October 1st 1908. It is the largest wine region\u00a0in Portugal, located in the Northwest, bordering with Spain, with the provinces of Minho and with Douro Litoral. It is divided into nine sub-regions, as you can see on the map below.<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"653\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12975 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/green-wine-portugal-best-wineries-map.png\" alt=\"green wine portugal best wineries map\"><br>The region of green wine\u00a0has around 20 THOUSAND producers (in contrast, for example, with the Douro Valley, which has more than 30 thousand producers), with an annual production of 80M liters of wine.<br><br>And,\u00a0out of curiosity &#8230; did you know\u00a0that green wines were the first Portuguese wines known in Europe, particularly by the United Kingdom? In fact, even before the Douro valley\u00a0had been &#8220;discovered&#8221; by the British, they already exported Portuguese wine from the green wine region\u00a0to the UK&#8230; \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top vineyards in the green wine region<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quinta do Soalheiro (Sub region of Mon\u00e7\u00e3o and Melga\u00e7o)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"485\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Soalheiro.jpg\" alt=\"Soalheiro\" class=\"wp-image-31010\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Soalheiro.jpg 778w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Soalheiro-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Soalheiro-768x479.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Quinta do Soalheiro is a family business that produces green wines of the Alvarinho \/ Albari\u00f1o grape variety since 1982. It is a company with an unique vision, focused on the brand and not just on the Alvarinho \/ Albari\u00f1o grape variety, as this grape variety will no longer be produced exclusively in the sub region of Mon\u00e7\u00e3o and Melga\u00e7o to be spread to the entire\u00a0region of green wine.<br><br>Quinta do Soalheiro has a fairly comprehensive wine portfolio, from single varietal of Alvarinho \/ Albari\u00f1o, blends of Alvarinho \/ Albari\u00f1o and Loureiro (another grape variety of the green wine\u00a0region), Terra Mater &#8211; a biological wine aged in chestnut barrels &#8211; and even a brut sparkling wine produced according to the traditional method. The winemaker is this incredible creative artist and I love his wines!<br><br>The visit to the vineyard\u00a0is made at Quinta do Soalheiro, and the proof of the wines are made in the beautiful Quinta das Folgas, just a few minutes away (by car).<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"444\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23744\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/quinta-folgas-green-wine-region-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"quinta folgas green wine region portugal\"><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"260\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23743\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/traditional-portuguese-food-minho-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese food minho portugal\"><br>Quinta do Soalheiro provide several wine tastings and food experiences, ranging from 15\u20ac to 90\u20ac \/ person. If you want to include a food pairing at Quinta das Folgas, it is naturally more expensive, but totally worth it. The location of Quinta das Folgas\u00a0is beautiful, and if it&#8217;s a\u00a0sunny day, ask for the tasting to take place\u00a0on the terrace \ud83d\ude09<br><br><em>Bookings: send an email to\u00a0quinta@soalheiro.com or\u00a0call +351251416769.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pal\u00e1cio da Brejoeira (Sub region of Mon\u00e7\u00e3o and Melga\u00e7o)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"445\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23747\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/palacio-brejoeira-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"palacio brejoeira portugal\"><br>Pal\u00e1cio da Brejoeira\u00a0is magnificent and I strongly recommend you to visit it due to the estate and the\u00a0story behind it. In 1937 Pal\u00e1cio da Brejoeira was acquired by Francisco de Oliveira Paes, a wealthy merchant of Lisbon that offered the palace as a birthday gift\u00a0to his daughter Herminia, when she turned 18.<br>Herminia, who passed away just a few years ago, was a pioneer woman in the production of Alvarinho \/ Albari\u00f1o grape variety, plating 2 hectares of this variety in 1964. A businesswoman and a happy traveller, Herminia used to say that &#8220;Alvarinho is my son.&#8221;<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"329\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23746\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/palacio-brejoeira-green-wine-tasting-vineyards.jpg\" alt=\"palacio brejoeira green wine tasting vineyards\"><br>The visits to\u00a0Pal\u00e1cio da Brejoeira are taken in Portuguese, English and French. In the afternoon, the last 30m visit starts at 18h and the last visit of 1h starts at 17h30.<br><br><em>Bookings: send an email to\u00a0recepcao@palaciodabrejoeira.pt or\u00a0call +351251667238.<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quinta do Ameal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wine tours portugal green wine region quinta do ameal\" width=\"778\" height=\"387\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12989 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/quinta-ameal-green-wine-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"quinta ameal green wine portugal\"><br>The first reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pt\/quinta-do-ameal-ponte-de-lima.en.html?aid=1186505&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1&amp;label=green-wine-region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Quinta do Ameal<\/a> dates from 1710, but, of course, wine production took off nearly three centuries later, in 1990, at the hands of Pedro Ara\u00fajo, who from the beginning chose to invest\u00a0in the production of fine white wines.<br>Quinta do Ameal &#8211; Classic received 94 points in the scale of Robert Parker, who holds the prestigious wine magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertparker.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Wine Advocate<\/a>. Quinta do Ameal was also elected in 2015 to &#8220;Matter of Taste&#8221;, an event hold by Robert Parker that selectively chooses\u00a0200 wines worldwide.<br>And it wouldn&#8217;t hurt to say\u00a0that this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pt\/quinta-do-ameal-ponte-de-lima.en.html?aid=1186505&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1&amp;label=green-wine-region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Quinta do Ameal<\/a>\u00a0has its wines in some of the most renowned Michelin-starred restaurants, such as Petrus in London.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"535\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23748\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/wine-tasting-room-quinta-ameal-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"wine tasting room quinta ameal portugal\"><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wine tours portugal green wine region quinta do ameal\" width=\"778\" height=\"568\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12987 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/green-wine-portugal-best-wineries-quinta-ameal.jpg\" alt=\"green wine portugal best wineries quinta ameal\"><br>Unfortunately, this property has been sold to a big, corporate wine brand in Portugal (in 2019) and I don&#8217;t really know what changes that will bring to the wines nor to the space itself &#8211; hopefully, none!<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pt\/quinta-do-ameal-ponte-de-lima.en.html?aid=1186505&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1&amp;label=green-wine-region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Quinta do Ameal<\/a> is absolutely charming\u00a0and it includes, in addition to the vineyards, two holiday cottages, an outdoor pool, magnificent pine trees, several gardens and a wine cellar. It is a space where time runs slower, between beautiful wines and mild conversations around the fireplace.<br><br><em>Bookings: send an email to reservas.ameal@esporao.com\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Casa de Cello (Sub region of Amarante)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wine tours portugal green wine region casa de cello\" width=\"778\" height=\"519\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12986 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/casa-de-cello-green-wine-portugal.jpg\" alt=\"casa de cello green wine portugal\"><br>Casa de Cello\u00a0is another card completely off the deck in the green wine\u00a0region and we must thank it\u00a0for that. Whether for its wine production philosophy, which heavily focuses on extreme caution during the\u00a0viticulture (irrigation, aeration of the production, pruning, etc.) in order to have less intervention in the cellars, producing more natural wines that clearly express the terroir characteristics.<br>Typically, Casa de Cello welcomes no one other than its customers and distributors, but if you want my advice just go there, as they will most likely welcome you anyway.
