I am writing for the mysteries of the Traditional Portuguese Carnival in Northeast Portugal; I am writing for the friendship I found in <em>caretos<\/em>, the masked men from Podence;\u00a0I am writing for the astonishing landscape of the natural park of Azibo, the stage of many\u00a0carnival adventures.<br>Above all, I am writing because my family is from\u00a0Tr\u00e1s os Montes, in Northeast Portugal, and I feel very moved to have participated in the traditional Portuguese Carnival of Podence, a tiny tiny village over there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is so special about the traditional Portuguese Carnival in Podence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike the Brazilian Carnival or the Carnival in&nbsp;Venice, in Northeast Portugal the celebrations of Carnival are deeply connected to pagan rituals that date from the Roman times.<br>Therefore, every year there is a strong activity programme during the celebration of the traditional Portuguese Carnival in Podence.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7611\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/P1110545.jpg\" alt=\"carnaval podence caretos\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\"><br>The parades of <em>caretos<\/em>, that take place in Podence and in Macedo de Cavaleiros, are unmissable. Men go out using&nbsp;masks with bouncy bells, with which they &#8220;choke&#8221; the single ladies, jumping all around them.<br>The secret, ladies, is to grab them and jump while they jump, otherwise&nbsp;the bells&nbsp;really hurt when they hit&nbsp;your backs!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7612 size-full\" title=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/P1110507.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\"><br>There is also the burning of the <em>entrudo<\/em>: a devilish red straw doll with horns. It is a dramatic moment of great social catharsis.<br>I watched the burning of two <em>entrudos<\/em>: one in Macedo de Cavaleiros, after the parade of&nbsp;<em>caretos<\/em>&#8230;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7615 size-full\" title=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG-20170301-WA0010.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" width=\"668\" height=\"444\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7616 size-full\" title=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG-20170301-WA0012.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" width=\"668\" height=\"459\"><br>&#8230; and another after <em>preg\u00e3o casamenteiro<\/em> &#8211; a&nbsp;beautiful tradition in which the men of Podence, using&nbsp;giant megaphones, announce &#8220;marriages&#8221; among the bachelors of the village. The next day, the &#8220;bride&#8221; prepares breakfast for her &#8220;fiance&#8221;.<br>In fact, <em>preg\u00e3o casamenteiro<\/em>&nbsp;is not an exclusive tradition of the Carnival of Podence &#8211; my mother told me that they did&nbsp;this ritual in our village, Duas Igrejas, and other places in Northeast Portugal.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7621 size-full\" title=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/P1110587.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7620 size-full\" title=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/P1110583.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" width=\"668\" height=\"455\"><br>After <em>preg\u00e3o casamenteiro<\/em>, it is time to burn yet another <em>entrudo<\/em>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7619 size-full\" title=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG-20170228-WA0032.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" width=\"668\" height=\"501\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What else to do during the traditional Portuguese Carnival in Podence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the things I most enjoyed doing was to visit the natural park of Azibo, just 2minutes driving distance from Podence.<br>The landscape is breathtaking, requiring a few moments of silence to be fully appreciated.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7626 size-full\" title=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/P1110568.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7625 size-full\" title=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/P1110559.jpg\" alt=\"traditional portuguese carnival podence\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\"><br>To reach the place on the photos above, simply follow the directions to &#8220;Azibo&#8221;. Once you enter the natural park, drive in the direction of a small village called SantaCombinha.<br>You&#8217;ll pass through several beaches, and when you reach Santa Combinha, follow a plaque saying&nbsp;&#8220;parque de merendas&#8221;, on your right hand side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hold your breath, it&#8217;s time to tell you about a strong tradition!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is tradition that has always fascinated me is the slaughter of the pig. It is a family ritual, with clear separation of masculine and feminine roles, and that marks still the end&nbsp;of the harsh winter.<br>Sadly, my family has not slaughtered any pig since my grandfather died, so I had not yet had the opportunity to photograph this magnificent event that persists in the Portuguese villages. Nowadays it is done with a blowtorch, but in my grandfather&#8217;s time, it was with burning hay!<br>At the same time, the nails of the pig are removed, and with very sharp knives, the charred fur is scraped off. The organs are exposed, to be quickly removed all together.<br>On the day of the pig&#8217;s slaughter at the Traditional Portuguese&nbsp;Carnival in Podence, they tossed the intestines&nbsp;out. In my family, we would keep the intestines that the women would very, very patiently wash by hand.&nbsp;The intestines would&nbsp;then used to make the <em>chouri\u00e7as<\/em>, the <em>alheiras<\/em>, the <em>morcelas<\/em>, the sausages&#8230; how I miss&nbsp;those times!<br>Depois, a verdadeira per\u00edcia: o homem mais experiente abre o porco, e retira a pele toda da barriga. Os org\u00e3os ficam expostos, para rapidamente serem retirados, em conjunto.<br>No dia da matan\u00e7a do porco no Carnaval de&nbsp;Podence, deitaram as tripas fora; na minha fam\u00edlia, come\u00e7ava nessa altura o trabalho das mulheres que, laboriosamente, lavavam as tripas \u00e0 m\u00e3o. Estas eram depois usadas para fazer as chouri\u00e7as, as alheiras, o chouri\u00e7o de ossos, as morcelas, as lingui\u00e7as&#8230; que saudades desses tempos!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to stay during the traditional Portuguese Carnival in&nbsp;Podence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pt\/dona-fina-guest-house.html?aid=1186505&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2&amp;label=carnival-in-podence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Dona Fina\u00a0Guesthouse<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rua da Rep\u00fablica, 126. But it was an excellent decision to stay at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pt\/dona-fina-guest-house.html?aid=1186505&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2&amp;label=carnival-in-podence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Dona Fina\u00a0Guesthouse<\/a>!<br>Besides the very affordable price, the trips between Mirandela and Podence were quite easy to make. Everyday I would come back to Mirandela to take a nap before the night festivities in Podence, which made me feel very relaxed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandra, the owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/pt\/dona-fina-guest-house.html?aid=1186505&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2&amp;label=carnival-in-podence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Dona Fina\u00a0Guesthouse<\/a>, made me feel very welcomed indeed. I didn&#8217;t tell her that I was a blogger and as such I didn&#8217;t get a &#8220;VIP treatment&#8221;; she simply welcomed me with all the kindness and joy that she dedicates to all her guests!<br>Everyday there was fresh cake, bread, organic fruits and much more at the complete disposal of the guests. It is a typical Portuguese restaurant, with true northeastern&nbsp;delights such as&nbsp;alheiras (a sausage made of pork meat and bread) and fabulous <em>casulas \u00e0 Trasmontana<\/em> (a typical stew from the Northeast Portugal). To finish off, a delicious chestnut pudding.<br>A meal with soup, main course, dessert and drink costs&nbsp;about 15 \u20ac\/person. It is called&nbsp;Curral dos Caretos, and it is the real meeting place of <em>caretos<\/em>, where everyone gathers to eat and drink, to play music and to choke&nbsp;the single ladies, long after tourists are gone.<br>The various cuts&nbsp;of meat are cooked in the fire in large iron pots, just like my grandmother does.<br>But what is really good at&nbsp;the Curral dos Caretos is the <em>alheira<\/em> &#8211; unfortunately they run out of them, before I had the time to buy a dozen to bring to Porto!<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"traditional Portuguese Carnival Podence\" width=\"668\" height=\"470\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7608 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG-20170227-WA0004.jpg\" alt=\"traditional Portuguese Carnival Podence\"><br>I want to finish this article with an&nbsp;homage. Do not just stick around for photos and videos. Get to know <em>caretos<\/em>, interact with them as much as you can. They are wonderful men, very hospitable and respectful, who will make you feel at home and missing the traditional Portuguese Carnival in Podence the moment it is over.
