Pedro V acquired the respectable Palace of Carrancas to transform it into the official residence of the royal family during their visits to Porto.<br>In 1894, king D. Carlos I gives a land to the Association of the Velo Club of the Porto, precisely on the back of the old Palace of Carrancas, so that it could built a velodrome there. As usual at the time, the velodrome was awarded the name of the queen consort, Maria Amelia.<br>The Maria Am\u00e9lia velodrome was Porto&#8217;s largest sports venue, with a 333.33 meter perimeter track and two tennis courts. The venue hosted many races and numerous sport events, such as the first motorbike race in Portugal.<br>With the implantation of the Republic, in 1910, the Maria Am\u00e9lia velodrome closed, and the inclemency of time took over this fabulous (and now) hidden place in Porto.<br>The old velodrome is located behind the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/best-museums-porto\/\">Soares dos Reis National Museum<\/a>.<br><em>How to get there: <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/5-things-dont-know-casa-da-musica-porto\/\">Casa da M\u00fasica<\/a> subway station is a 20 minutes walking distance. There is also a bus stop right in front where a lot of buses stop, namely: 200, 201, 207, 208, 302, 501, 507 and 601.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Capela do Sr. de Al\u00e9m<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"420\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/senhor-alem-chapel-porto.jpg\" alt=\"senhor alem chapel porto\" class=\"wp-image-39202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/senhor-alem-chapel-porto.jpg 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/senhor-alem-chapel-porto-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hidden from inattentive glances, the Chapel of Senhor d&#8217;Al\u00e9m, built in 1877 close to the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/where-can-i-take-the-best-photo-of-porto\/\">Serra do Pilar<\/a>, is an open invitation for those who appreciate ruined monuments.<br>The original chapel was erected by the bishop Pedro Rabaldi in 1140, because a picture of the Crucified Lord was found during the construction of a convent dedicated to St. Nicholas.<br>This same image would sparkle <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/why-is-there-a-rivalry-between-porto-and-gaia\/\">another conflict between Porto and the city of Gaia.<\/a> The image was borrowed by Porto on a special festivity when of the prayers <em>ad preltendam pluviam<\/em> &#8211; pray for the fall of rains &#8211; were conducted in a fervent procession through the streets of the city.<br>As it rained on that day, the canons of the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/everything-about-portos-cathedral\/\">cathedral of Porto<\/a> collected the image and no longer returned it to its original abode, the Chapel of Senhor d&#8217;Al\u00e9m.<br>As a consequence, the inhabitants if Gaia built a new image to put in their chapel, and they never again lended anything to their greedy neighbours. We &#8211; the inhabitants of Porto- kept the stolen image, and the inhabitants of Gaia kept one of the most beautiful hidden places in Porto.<br>If you go to this place, gently knock at the door: this beautiful chapel has a very special guardian who will gladly welcome you.<br><em>How to get there: walk from Jardim do Morro <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/how-to-use-the-metro-of-porto\/\">subway station<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jewish gravestone at the Cemitery of Agramonte<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rua da Medita\u00e7\u00e3o | Porto<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"441\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jewish-gravestone-hidden-places-porto.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jewish-gravestone-hidden-places-porto.jpg 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jewish-gravestone-hidden-places-porto-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is widely know my appreciation for <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/history-jewish-quarters-porto\/\">Jewish history<\/a>; in such a way that I organise <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/jewish-tour\/\">Jewish Heritage tours in Porto<\/a>.<br>Curiously, my first contact with the Jewish heritage in the city took place at one of the most beautiful hidden places in Porto, many years ago.<br>At that time, I was distractedly walking at the Cemetery of Agramonte. It will be our pleasure to guide you!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chambers of Torture of PIDE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Museu Militar do Porto &#8211; Rua do Hero\u00edsmo, 329 | Porto<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"454\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/military-museum-porto.jpg\" alt=\"military museum porto\" class=\"wp-image-33490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/military-museum-porto.jpg 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/military-museum-porto-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Very close to my house, near the entrance of the cemetery of Prado do Repouso, is the Military Museum of Porto, which hides one of the most secretive hidden places in Porto.<br>After all, this late nineteenth century building housed the Delegation of PIDE-DGS (the state security service of the dictatorial Salazar&#8217;s regime) for decades.<br>At this building took place the interrogation, torture and arrest of more than 7.600 dissents of the dictatorship. From the top floor, where the interrogation and torture took place the prisoners descended to hell to the imprisoned isolation on the cells on the ground floor.<br>According to M. Superville, a lawyer who personally spoke with the victims of PIDE: &#8220;The most common method of torture employed in Porto consists of obliging <em>the exercise of the statue<\/em>. The accused must stand until he answers all the questions. It goes on without any sleep time for several days and nights, with only short breaks to eat food. The lowest fainting is brutally suppressed.\u00bb<br>The most famous prisoners were Silva Marques, who escaped on a rainy night in 1962, and Herm\u00ednia da Palma In\u00e1cio, in 1969. Both are immortalised in statues placed next to the Military Museum of Porto, as silent guardians of a forgotten past.<br><em>How to get there: Hero\u00edsmo <meta charset=\"utf-8\"><em>subway station<\/em> is a 5 minutes walking distance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(Tiny bits of) a Medieval Door of Porto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"444\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/cafe-portas-olival-porto.jpg\" alt=\"cafe portas olival porto\" class=\"wp-image-33455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/cafe-portas-olival-porto.jpg 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/cafe-portas-olival-porto-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ordinary Caf\u00e9 Porta do Olival is the oldest coffee place in Porto, being opened since 1853 (much older than the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/why-have-coffee-at-cafe-majestic-and-cafe-guarany\/\">famous Caf\u00e9s Majestic and Guarany<\/a>).<br>This small caf\u00e9, so close to our beloved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com.br\/porto-l151\/porto-ingresso-torre-dos-clerigos-t57114\/?partner_id=H93B56T&amp;cmp=hidden-places-porto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Cl\u00e9rigos tower<\/a>, hides one of the most interesting hidden places in Porto: a small arch from the Porta do Olival, simply one of the most important doors of the medieval walls of the city!<br>There is plenty of reason for excitement: after all, the medieval walls is one of the oldest structures in Porto (it was built between 1336 and 1376). Moreover, through this door in particular &#8211; Porta do Olival, that Philippa of Lancaster entered in Porto to get married to the king D. Jo\u00e3o I, becoming the queen consort of Portugal.<br>This marriage established the ancient alliance between Portugal and England. In addition to that, it originated an illustrious generation, of which the most famous member was Henry the Navigator.<br>This marriage was indeed so crucial that Jorge de Cola\u00e7o immortalised it in a gigantic panel at the <a href=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/the-ghost-of-sao-bento-train-station\/\">S\u00e3o Bento train station<\/a>. Porto has many reasons to be proud indeed!<br><em>(Important note: These two pictures were taken from a local newspaper called Jornal de Not\u00edcias because, unfortunately, when I went to take pictures the cafe was closed for vacations. I&#8217;ll get there as soon as they open to publish my own pictures!).<\/em><br><em>How to get there: S\u00e3o Bento train station is a 5 minutes walking distance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Little Flag of Health<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"467\" src=\"http:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hidden-places-porto-health-flag.jpg\" alt=\"hidden places porto health flag\" class=\"wp-image-33469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hidden-places-porto-health-flag.jpg 668w, https:\/\/portoalities.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hidden-places-porto-health-flag-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, Porto had (at least) one simple and effective system of disease control: the <em>bandeirinha<\/em>, which translates to the little flag.<br>The flagship was hoisted in a granite turret right in front of the Palace of the Mermaids, each time a new boat was sighted to sail towards the stream. When the ship saw the flag, it had to stop in the middle of the river, awaiting the visit of a sanitary commission which purpose was to inspect the health of the passengers on board.<br>If there were sick people, they would go through a quarantine period in the old Santo Ant\u00f3nio da Piedade Monastery, then transformed into &#8220;Lazareto&#8221;.<br>It is worth visiting what is one of the most interesting hidden places in Porto, not only for the flag itself but also &#8211; or mainly &#8211; for the non touristic view on the Douro river.<br><em>How to get there: take the tram 1 and get out at the stop Alf\u00e2ndega.
