One of the most popular tours in Porto is the 6 Bridges Cruise. In this post I describe the tour, including the terms and conditions of the companies providing this service and answer the big question: is it worth to take the 6 Bridges Cruise?

What is the 6 Bridges Cruise:

It is a 50min boat trip, starting either at Ribeira’s quay (in Porto), or in Vila Nova de Gaia’s quay (depending on the company you choose), and it shows the six (gorgeous!) bridges of Porto.

It starts at D. Luís bridge, designed by Théophile Seyrig – no, this is NOT Eiffel’s bridge!

Afterwards, you’ll see Infante Dom Henrique’s bridge, launched in 2003.

Then D. Maria Pia’s bridge – designed by Théophile Seyrig and Gustave Eiffel. In 1991, the bridge was superseded by São João’s bridge, built some meters away, as you can see in the picture.

Behind São João’s bridge, looking very tiny on this picture, is Freixo’s bridge, launched in 1995.

It’s time to go peek my favorite bridge of Porto, the Arrábida Bridge. What a superb piece of engineering!

During the 6 bridges cruise, you can admire the wonderful views of both Porto and Afurada (which does not appear in this picture!).

The big question: is it worth it to take the 6 bridges Cruise?

My answer is … it depends 🙂 In terms of information, you will not get to know more than if you read the first paragraph of the Wikipedia’s page of each of the bridges. In that sense, the 6 bridges cruises is very poor.

However, it may be a good option if you are in between tours or have some free time before dinner. It can also be a fun program from elder tourists or families travelling with kids – they usually love it!

Moreover, the views from the middle of the Douro river are absolutely fabulous 🙂

You can buy the online tickets here – this way you’ll save a lot of time waiting on the loooooong queues at the deck (they are particularly annoying during summer time).
