One of the high points of our journey through Portugal was Sara’s Jewish heritage tour of Porto. This is no impersonal, prefab excursion. Sara draws on her own deep study of Jewish and general Portuguese history and engages her guests in genuine conversation, weaving their questions and interests into her presentation. The tour brought Porto’s little-known Jewish past to life for us and was filled with astute observations about the relation of religion and politics in Portuguese history. The three hours passed quickly and ended with a taste of kosher port wine, which Sara brought to share with us. Don’t miss this tour; you’ll remember it long after.
