During the holidays, I don’t need a reason to go to the Christmas markets in Porto. I like to go there to see happy faces, friends gathering together, the charming Christmas lightnings…
And Porto, with its mild temperatures and airy squares, is asking for you to go shopping on the small markets, instead of going to shopping malls where all the shops look exactly the same!
So I decided to write this article of the best Christmas markets in Porto! But before we get there, a few important things…
Most hotels in Porto are already sold out for Christmas 2023
I have been getting a lot of emails from the local hotels and even apartments telling me that they are already sold out for 2023. If you are not from Porto and you haven’t booked your place to stay during Christmas holidays in the city, I want to help out. I cannot possibly know what properties are available every single until Christmas, but I can connect you to Porto’s page on Booking.com so that you can find the best deals still available.

This is THE BEST Christmas event in Porto in 2023
I honestly cannot thing of a better activity to do in Porto around Christmas other than to be dazzled by a multimedia show at our beloved Clérigos church – in my opinion, the most beautiful church in the city.
The show lasts around 30 minutes and it is inspired by a poem of Álvaro de Campos, the pseudonym of the most famous Portuguese writer of all time, Fernando Pessoa.
I won’t tell you more about what you’ll see (so as not to spoil the surprise!), so I’ll just tell you that the effect of the lights projected on the oval walls of the Clérigos Church, the music and the colors create a beautiful and unforgettable effect.
This show is only available until the 8th of January and has very limited seats, so I recommend you to get your tickets online. To make sure you don’t miss out on this great experience! And if the weather is nice, it is worth it to get the ticket to Climb the Clérigos tower. as the view from the top is stunning 🙂
Local tip: get there earlier in order to to sit in the back seats, from where you have a better panoramic view of the church 😉
What you should know about Christmas markets in Porto
Christmas season is very strong in the city, don’t expect it to be as in Central Europe.
We don’t have a centralised Christmas market in Porto but rather small markets spread all over the city, where you can find traditional Christmas decoration stuff, but also traditional Portuguese food products, urban design and much more.
Moreover, we don’t have snow, nor glue wine. But that is a good thing, because glue wine s***s. There, I said it 😛
On the other hand, we have a very welcoming weather. More importantly, our City Hall organises 5 weeks Christmas programme with plenty of activities such as choirs, street animation, concerts and workshops.
You can read my Complete guide to Christmas in Porto, as it congregates the best events.
And, as usual, if you want to make the most of the holidays season in Porto, make sure to book one of our private tours – we are already sold out for a lot of the dates around Christmas!
Given this introduction, let me introduce you to…
…the best Christmas markets in Porto 2023!🙂
