Once and a while I get emails asking what is the best Hop On Hop Off Bus tour in Porto.

I decided to write an article with everything you need to know about the two best Hop On Hop Off Bus tours in Porto – schedules, price and tickets, etc. I hope you enjoy the ride! 🙂

The bus tours in Porto are worth it if you:

  • … have little time in the city. This way you’ll get an idea of the main attractions in Porto.
  • … have a few days in Porto, but would like to have a first look before deciding which monuments to visit.
  • … are coming to Porto with kids: it’s always a joy to climb to the second floor of the bus to see the world from up there!
  • … would like to visit places further away from the city center, like the beaches in Matosinhos and the Port wine cellars in Gaia.

The bus tours in Porto are also a good option if it’s raining – even though I suggest you to check my ideas on what to do in Winter in Porto 😉

1st option – Yellow Bus Combo Ticket:
Hop On Hop Off Bus tour + boat cruise + visit to a Port wine cellar

This is the Hop On Hop Off Bus tour in Porto that I like the most because with a single ticket you get to do three must do’s in Porto: Bus ride, boat cruise in douro river and a visit to a Port wine cellar.

Let’s do the math: the bus ride price is 13€, the boat cruise is around 10 / 12€ (it depends on the provider) and a visit to a Port wine cellar costs between 6 to 10€. Therefore, it really pays off to buy the Yellow Bus Combo ticket for 24€!

Regarding the Yellow Bus tour in Porto, there are two itineraries.

The first one is the Historical Porto, that goes through Downtown Porto, then Foz (by the riverside), and then to the Port wine cellars in Gaia. It is really nice for those of you who would like to get a view over the most important monuments in Porto, but also check the Port wine cellars in Gaia.

For shop lovers it is also a good bus tour, as one of the stops is in front of El Corte Inglès, a massive Spanish chain that sells pretty much everything.

The other Yellow Bus tour in Porto also wonders a bit in the city centre and by the riverside, but then it heads to Matosinhos, a fantastic city for fish and seafood lovers.

It also makes a great stop in front of the beach of Matosinhos and in front of Parque da Cidade, the largest city park in Porto, ideal for walking or riding a bike.

Important information on the Yellow Bus tour in Porto

Where to buy the combo ticket (Hop On Hop Off Bus tour + boat cruise + visit to a Port wine cellar) for the Yellow Bus: The simplest way is to get the combo ticket online, specially because these bus tours get full very quickly, specially during Summer. This way you don’t need to worry about whether or not you’ll get a place, and you can forget the queues to buy the tickets.

Then you just need to print it and show it at one of the bus stops. To get your combo ticket online for 24€, click here.

2nd Option – CitySightseeing Portugal Hop On Hop Off Bus tour
(Red Bus tour)

CitySightseeing is another provider of a Hop On Hop Off Bus tour in Porto. I simply call it the Red Bus due to its colour 😛 It also has two itineraries.

The red line itinerary is very similar to the Historical Porto from Yellow Bus. The major difference is that in the red line itinerary you’ll also stop at Croft, my favourite Port wine cellar in Porto. The view from there is spectacular and to make a Croft wine tasting paired up with some chocolate tasting is fabulous!

The blue line itinerary of the Red Bus tour in Porto by CitySightseeing Portugal is as the following:

Should I buy a 1 day or a 2 day ticket for the Red Bus tour in Porto?

The difference in price for a 1 day or 2 day ticket is really small:

1 day ticket – Adult: 13€
1 day ticket – Children: 6,5€

2 days ticket – Adult: 15€
2 days ticket – Children: 7,5€

Therefore if you don’t have a fixed plan for your days in Porto it might pay off to buy the 2 day ticket for the Red Bus tour, as you can use it as a regular bus tour that lasts for 48h!

Important information on the Red Bus tour in Porto by CitySightseeing:

Important tips on Hop On Hop Off Bus tours in Porto:

  • Don’t forget to check the attractions discounts that come with your ticket! For instance, both the Yellow and the Red Bus offer a 25% discount on the ticket to Serralves and 30% discount on the ticket of SEA LIFE. In order to know what are the attractions discounts that you’re entitled to when you buy your ticket, simply get the map at the entrance of the bus. On the back of the map, there is a list with all the attractions discounts.
